Saron Shrimp are unusual ornamental shrimp prized for their marbled coloration, active scavenging behavior, and unique nighttime activity. Also known as Common Marble Shrimp, Saron Shrimp are often found in shallow reef environments where they move through rubble, sand, and rocky areas searching for food. Their coloration can be highly variable, with shades of green, brown, red, tan, and white speckling that help them blend into reef and rubble habitats. While they are hardy and interesting to observe, Saron Shrimp are best kept with caution in reef aquariums, as they may pick at certain corals, sessile invertebrates, or smaller ornamental animals if underfed.
Introduction to Saron Shrimp (Marbled Nocturnal Scavenger & Ornamental Shrimp)
Saron Shrimp (Saron marmoratus) are eye-catching marine shrimp known for their marbled pattern, long walking legs, and secretive behavior. During the day, they often hide within rockwork, caves, or coral rubble, becoming more active after the lights go out. In the aquarium, they act as opportunistic scavengers, feeding on leftover foods, detritus, algae, small organic particles, and meaty foods. Their unusual appearance and nocturnal activity make them a great choice for hobbyists looking for a more unique shrimp, but they should not be treated like a standard cleaner shrimp.
Care Requirements
Care Level: Easy to Moderate – Hardy, but best for stable aquariums with careful tankmate selection
Minimum Tank Size: 20+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Requires live rock, caves, shaded areas, rubble zones, and stable reef parameters
Saron Shrimp do best in mature saltwater aquariums with plenty of hiding places and rockwork to explore. They may remain hidden during the day, especially when first introduced, but usually become more active at night. Because they are opportunistic feeders, they are better suited for aquariums where their behavior can be monitored, especially if kept around corals or smaller ornamental invertebrates.
Diet & Nutrition
Saron Shrimp are opportunistic omnivores and scavengers that feed on detritus, algae, leftover foods, and meaty items.
Diet: Omnivorous – Eats detritus, algae, leftover food, frozen foods, and small meaty foods
Recommended Foods:
Frozen mysis shrimp
Brine shrimp
Plankton-based foods
Finely chopped seafood
High-quality flakes or pellets
Leftover meaty foods from regular fish feedings
Saron Shrimp should be fed regularly and should not be expected to survive only on scraps. Keeping them well fed may help reduce the chance of them picking at corals or other small invertebrates.
Lifespan & Growth Rate
Lifespan: 2-4+ years with proper care
Growth Rate: Moderate – Can grow up to about 2-3 inches, depending on the species or collection form
Saron Shrimp grow by molting and require stable water parameters to complete molts successfully. Maintaining proper iodine, magnesium, calcium, and overall trace element balance can help support healthy molting and long-term condition.
Temperament & Compatibility
Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Peaceful – Generally non-aggressive, but opportunistic
Reef Safe? With caution – May pick at certain corals, sessile invertebrates, or very small ornamental animals
Saron Shrimp can be kept in peaceful aquariums, but they should be selected carefully for reef systems. They are not ideal for tanks with delicate corals, very small shrimp, tiny ornamental invertebrates, or clam mantles that could be investigated at night. Avoid housing them with aggressive shrimp predators such as triggers, puffers, hawkfish, large wrasses, lionfish, large crabs, or other animals that may eat ornamental shrimp.
Common Challenges & Considerations
Reef Safe With Caution: Saron Shrimp are opportunistic and may pick at corals, sessile invertebrates, or small ornamental animals, especially if underfed.
Nocturnal Behavior: They often hide during the day and become more active after dark.
Needs Hiding Places: Rock caves, rubble zones, and shaded areas help them feel secure.
Variable Coloration: Their coloration can range from green, brown, tan, red, and white, and may appear different between day and night.
Molting Sensitivity: Sudden changes in salinity, pH, or alkalinity can cause stress during molting.
Sensitive to Copper: Like all marine shrimp, they should never be exposed to copper-based medications.
To prevent issues, acclimate them carefully, provide plenty of hiding places, feed them consistently, avoid copper exposure, and use caution when placing them in coral-heavy reef aquariums.
