FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Does the Horse Face Blenny need an established aquarium?
Yes. A mature system with abundant algae and biofilm supports its continuous grazing habit, while newly established or sterile tanks present a genuine starvation risk.
Can it be kept with other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling fish?
Generally no. It is strongly territorial and best kept singly, since other blennies, gobies, and similarly shaped or competing benthic fish are likely to be attacked.
Is the Horse Face Blenny completely reef safe?
No guarantee can be made. Occasional nipping of small-polyp stony corals and clam mantles has been reported, so it belongs in a reef only with caution and close observation.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Redlip Blenny is a bold, characterful saltwater fish recognized by its dark reddish-brown to charcoal body, blunt head, and prominent red to orange lips. Its expressive face and habit of perching on rockwork give it plenty of personality, while its constant grazing behavior can make it an interesting addition to established marine aquariums. Adults can reach roughly 7.5 inches, making this a considerably larger blenny than many aquarists expect.
Ophioblennius atlanticus is native to tropical Atlantic reef environments, including the Caribbean, western Atlantic, Atlantic islands, and portions of the eastern Atlantic. It naturally inhabits shallow rocky and coral reef areas exposed to strong water movement, where adults graze filamentous algae and detritus from hard surfaces.
Although generally compatible with corals, the Redlip Blenny can be highly territorial, particularly toward other blennies and fish occupying similar rockwork. Its adult size, strong grazing behavior, and assertive personality make it best suited to an established reef or fish-only aquarium with ample territory.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Herbivore / Detritivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Tropical Atlantic, including the Caribbean and eastern Atlantic
Scientific Name: Ophioblennius atlanticus
Tank Requirements
Provide an established marine aquarium with substantial live rock containing holes, ledges, caves, and exposed surfaces for grazing. The Redlip Blenny spends much of its time close to reef structure and benefits from having a clearly defined territory with several secure retreats.
Moderate to strong water movement is appropriate and reflects the wave-exposed reef habitats this species naturally occupies. Leave some open swimming room while emphasizing mature rockwork covered with natural algal and biofilm growth.
A secure aquarium lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended. This species is capable of jumping, particularly when startled or involved in territorial disputes.
Diet and Feeding
The Redlip Blenny is primarily an herbivorous grazer that feeds heavily on filamentous algae and detritus growing on reef surfaces.
A mature aquarium with naturally occurring algae provides valuable grazing opportunities throughout the day. Supplement this with marine algae sheets, spirulina-based flakes, quality herbivore pellets, and frozen preparations formulated for herbivorous marine fish.
Small amounts of mysis shrimp or other meaty foods may also be accepted, but algae-based foods should form the foundation of the captive diet.
Feed once or twice daily while allowing continued access to natural grazing surfaces between meals.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Redlip Blenny can be considerably more territorial than many smaller community blennies. It may aggressively defend its preferred cave and surrounding rockwork, particularly against other blennies or similarly shaped bottom-dwelling fish.
It is generally more tolerant of unrelated species that occupy different areas of the aquarium. Suitable tankmates can include tangs, wrasses, clownfish, angelfish, cardinalfish, and other appropriately sized marine fish.
Avoid keeping multiple Redlip Blennies together in typical home aquariums unless the system is exceptionally large and provides clearly separated territories.
Reef Compatibility
The Redlip Blenny is considered reef safe.
It primarily grazes algae, biofilm, and detritus from hard surfaces and does not normally consume coral tissue or ornamental invertebrates. Shrimp, snails, crabs, and clams are generally ignored.
As with other active grazers, it may occasionally pick across coral skeletons or plugs while searching for algae, but this should not normally be confused with deliberate coral predation.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable salinity, strong oxygenation, and consistent water quality. This species is naturally associated with energetic shallow-water habitats, so good circulation is especially beneficial.
Common Considerations
- Larger than many blennies: Adults can reach approximately 7.5 inches, so adequate territory and swimming room are important.
- Territorial behavior: It can aggressively defend rockwork from other blennies and similarly shaped fish.
- Natural grazer: Mature rockwork with algae and biofilm helps support normal feeding behavior.
- Strong water movement: Good circulation and oxygenation suit its natural shallow-reef habitat.
- Jumping risk: A secure mesh lid or tightly fitted aquarium cover is recommended.
