Description
Red Mangrove propagules (Rhizophora mangle) from Reef Genetics are a living nutrient-export solution for reef, brackish, and paludarium systems. Each propagule is acclimated to reef-safe salinity (1.025 sg) and grown substrate-free to reduce the risk of introducing pests or debris. Sizes range from 1–12" to suit tanks of any scale, from nano builds to large display systems. Every specimen is inspected for health and viability before it ships. For hobbyists who want a natural, low-tech approach to nitrate and phosphate control with a strong visual payoff, these are a practical choice.

Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) occupy a unique space in the reef hobby: they function as a biological filtration tool while also serving as a centerpiece in naturalistic aquascapes. By drawing nitrates, phosphates, and other dissolved waste products out of the water column through their root and leaf systems, they provide a form of nutrient export that skimmers and refugium macroalgae cannot fully replicate. Reef Genetics propagules are acclimated to standard reef salinity (1.025 sg) before shipping, which means they can be introduced to a display tank or refugium without a lengthy transition period.

The root systems of established Red Mangroves do more than anchor the plant — they become biologically active structures that shelter fish and invertebrates and host beneficial microbial communities. Over time, a healthy mangrove develops a dense tangle of aerial prop roots that can significantly increase the total surface area available for microbial colonization. This makes them a functional addition to a refugium even before they reach a size where nutrient uptake becomes measurable. For paludarium builders, their natural tree-like silhouette and adaptive growth habit make them one of the few true trees that can thrive in a high-humidity, semi-aquatic environment.

Reef Genetics grows these propagules without substrate, which eliminates a common source of hitchhiker pests and keeps the shipping process clean. Available in three size categories — Small (1–6"), Large (6–12"), and Jumbo (12"+) — buyers can choose specimens that fit both their tank dimensions and their patience for grow-out time. Larger propagules are better established and will show root development sooner; smaller propagules cost less and are appropriate for systems where there is room to grow.

Successful long-term growth requires a few specific conditions. Full-spectrum lighting with PAR above 200 μmol/m²/s is recommended — standard reef lighting is generally sufficient, but low-light setups will stall growth. Mangroves are nutrient consumers, so they will not thrive in ultra-low-nutrient systems where nitrate and phosphate are essentially undetectable. When planting, leave less than 2" of stem exposed to air to maintain proper water transport through the propagule. Roots typically form within 30 days and leaf growth follows within 60 days under good conditions. Salt crystal accumulation on leaves is normal in reef environments and should be gently rinsed off periodically to prevent leaf damage.

Overview

Filter. Shelter. Aquascape.

Red Mangrove propagules deliver measurable nutrient export alongside a naturalistic structure that benefits the entire system. Here is what makes them worth the space.

  • Nutrient Export

    • Actively uptake nitrates and phosphates from the water column
    • Complement skimmers and refugium macroalgae as a long-term export strategy
    • Require measurable nutrients to thrive — best suited to systems with some nutrient load
  • Biological Habitat

    • Aerial prop roots provide shelter for fish and small invertebrates
    • Root surfaces host beneficial microbial communities
    • Increase total biological surface area in refugium or display setups
  • Aquascape Versatility

    • Natural tree-like growth habit suits reef, brackish, and paludarium displays
    • Acclimated to 1.025 sg — adaptable to brackish or freshwater with gradual transition
    • Available in Small, Large, and Jumbo sizes to fit tanks of any scale

Features

  • Small Size: 1–6"

    Small Size: 1–6"

The Small category covers propagules from approximately 1 to 6 inches in length. These are the most cost-effective entry point and are well suited to nano tanks or buyers who prefer to grow specimens from an early stage.

  • Large Size: 6–12"

    Large Size: 6–12"

Large propagules measure approximately 6 to 12 inches and are more established at time of shipment. Root development typically occurs sooner on larger specimens, making this size a practical choice for systems where faster establishment is a priority.

  • Jumbo Size: 12"+

    Jumbo Size: 12"+

Jumbo propagules exceed 12 inches and represent the most developed specimens available. These are best suited to large display tanks or paludariums where immediate visual impact and near-term leaf and root growth are desired.

    Growth Stages at a Glance

This diagram illustrates four progressive growth stages of a Red Mangrove propagule, from a bare seedling through to a leafed-out plant with developed roots. Roots typically emerge within 30 days and leaf growth follows within 60 days under proper lighting and nutrient conditions.
