FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What minimum aquarium size and aquascape does this angelfish need?
Provide a mature, well-established marine aquarium of at least 70 gallons with abundant live rock formed into caves and crevices. Avoid nano systems, where limited territory and grazing area can increase aggression and compromise feeding.
What should a Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish be fed?
Offer Spirulina and marine algae alongside sponge-containing angelfish foods, fortified brine shrimp, mysis, and other marine meaty items. Feed at least twice daily, reflecting a natural diet of algae, worms, and crustaceans.
Is it safe for a reef aquarium?
Only with caution. Underfed individuals may nip clam mantles, anemones, and LPS or SPS corals, so maintain frequent varied feedings and watch its behavior.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish (Centropyge flavipectoralis), also known as the Yellowfin Angelfish or Moonbeam Angelfish, is a distinctive dwarf marine angelfish with a dark brown to nearly black body accented by subtle metallic blue vertical markings. Its most recognizable feature is its bright yellow-to-golden pectoral fins, which create a vivid contrast against the darker body and give this compact saltwater fish its common name.
Native to the Indian Ocean, this species is known from Sri Lanka and the Maldives east toward the Andaman Sea region. In nature, it inhabits shallow reef-associated habitats, including areas of coral rubble and semi-open substrate, where it occurs close to structure and feeds throughout the day. Its relatively small adult size makes it an appealing dwarf angelfish, although it still requires adequate territory and established rockwork.
The Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish is best suited to a mature reef or fish-only aquarium where it has abundant places to explore, graze, and retreat. Like most Centropyge angelfish, it can become territorial toward similar fish and should be considered reef safe with caution because individual specimens may nip at corals and other sessile invertebrates.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indian Ocean – Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Andaman Sea region
Scientific Name: Centropyge flavipectoralis
Tank Requirements
A mature aquarium of at least 70 gallons is recommended for the Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish. Adults reach approximately 4 inches, but this active and territorial dwarf angelfish benefits from considerably more space than its small body size might suggest.
Provide extensive established live rock with caves, crevices, overhangs, and interconnected passages. Rockwork serves both as shelter and as an important grazing surface, allowing the fish to forage naturally throughout the day. Leave some open swimming space around the reef structure rather than creating an entirely enclosed aquascape.
A sand or gravel substrate is suitable, as this species does not have specialized substrate requirements. Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended, particularly during acclimation when newly introduced fish may be more prone to darting when startled.
Diet and Feeding
The Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish is an omnivore that naturally consumes a mixture of algae and small reef-associated organisms. A varied captive diet is important for maintaining healthy body condition and coloration.
Offer high-quality marine angelfish preparations, Spirulina-based foods, marine algae, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen blends, and appropriately sized pellets. Foods containing sponge material can also be incorporated to provide additional variety appropriate for marine angelfish.
Established live rock should provide regular grazing opportunities between meals. Feed two to three smaller portions per day when practical rather than relying exclusively on a single large feeding.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish is semi-aggressive and may establish a territory around preferred caves and sections of rockwork. Once settled, it can become particularly defensive toward other dwarf angelfish or fish with a similar shape and feeding strategy.
It can generally be maintained with a variety of peaceful to moderately assertive marine fish as long as the aquarium provides sufficient territory. Suitable companions may include wrasses, gobies, blennies, clownfish, moderately sized tangs, and other community saltwater fish appropriate for the aquarium.
Keeping a single specimen is the simplest arrangement for most aquariums. Combining it with other Centropygeangelfish should only be attempted in substantially larger systems with extensive rockwork, multiple territories, and careful attention to aggression.
Reef Compatibility
The Pygmy Yellowfin Angelfish is reef safe with caution.
As with other dwarf angelfish, individual behavior varies considerably. Some specimens coexist successfully with corals, while others may nip at soft corals, LPS or SPS polyps, zoanthids, clam mantles, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates.
Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk than corals and clams. However, no individual Centropyge angelfish can be guaranteed to remain completely harmless in a reef aquarium.
Keeping the fish well fed and providing abundant established rockwork for natural grazing may reduce unwanted picking, but it does not eliminate the possibility.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, well-oxygenated seawater and avoid rapid fluctuations in salinity, temperature, pH, or alkalinity. Long-term stability is more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to reach one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Territorial behavior: Established specimens may become aggressive toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish.
-
Reef safe with caution: Coral polyps, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates may be sampled or nipped.
-
Mature live rock is beneficial: Abundant rockwork provides essential shelter, territory, and natural grazing surfaces.
-
Adult size: Although it reaches only about 4 inches, its territorial nature makes a spacious aquarium important for long-term care.
-
Varied feeding: Provide both algae-based and marine meaty foods several times daily to support its omnivorous feeding habits.
