FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How large an aquarium does a Pink Skunk Clownfish need?
A 30-gallon aquarium is the minimum for an adult. If a host anemone is maintained in the same display, more than 50 gallons is the better choice.
Does this clownfish require a host anemone?
An anemone is not mandatory, but the species does best with a preferred host and may remain nervous without one. Natural hosts include Heteractis magnifica, Heteractis crispa, Macrodactyla doreensis, and Stichodactyla gigantea.
Is the Pink Skunk Clownfish suitable for a reef aquarium?
Yes, it is reef safe and does not bother corals. Treat compatibility with mobile invertebrates as conditional and watch interactions after introduction.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Pink Skunk Clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion) is an elegant saltwater fish recognized by its soft peach-pink to orange coloration, narrow white head bar, and distinctive white stripe extending along the top of the body. Its delicate coloration and streamlined appearance give it a noticeably different look from the heavier-bodied, more intensely colored clownfish commonly seen in reef aquariums.
Native to the eastern Indian Ocean and Western Pacific, this species inhabits lagoon and seaward reef environments where it forms close associations with sea anemones. In nature, Pink Skunk Clownfish are commonly found as established pairs around a host, although an anemone is not required for successful aquarium care.
Reaching approximately 4 inches as an adult, the Pink Skunk Clownfish is among the more peaceful clownfish species and is especially well suited to calm community reef aquariums. It is generally reef safe, readily accepts a varied omnivorous diet, and can make an attractive choice for aquarists seeking a clownfish with a more subtle appearance and less assertive temperament than larger species.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Pacific
Scientific Name: Amphiprion perideraion
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature, stable saltwater aquarium with ample rockwork, sheltered areas, and open swimming space. Pink Skunk Clownfish typically establish a preferred area of the aquarium and may remain close to a particular coral, rock formation, or host anemone.
Moderate, varied water movement is appropriate, although calmer areas should be available for resting. No specialized substrate is required, making this species suitable for both sand-bottom and bare-bottom marine aquariums.
A host anemone is optional. Natural associations include several anemone species, particularly Magnificent Sea Anemones, as well as Sebae, Corkscrew, and Giant Carpet Anemones. Any anemone should only be added to a mature aquarium capable of meeting its separate lighting and husbandry requirements.
A secure aquarium cover is recommended. Although clownfish usually remain close to their established territory, startled or newly introduced specimens can jump.
Diet and Feeding
The Pink Skunk Clownfish is an omnivore and adapts readily to a varied aquarium diet.
Offer high-quality marine pellets or flakes along with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, and balanced frozen marine blends. Spirulina-based foods and other preparations containing marine algae can provide valuable plant material and dietary variety.
Feed once or twice daily, providing portions that can be consumed without excessive waste. Smaller individuals and actively breeding pairs may benefit from additional small meals.
A varied diet combining quality prepared foods with frozen marine foods helps maintain good body condition and coloration.
Temperament and Tankmates
Pink Skunk Clownfish are generally more peaceful than many larger clownfish species, making them well suited to community reef aquariums. They can still become territorial around a host anemone, coral, or established nesting site, particularly once a pair has formed.
Suitable tankmates include peaceful gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, firefish, smaller wrasses, tangs, and other community-oriented marine fish.
A single specimen or compatible male-female pair is the preferred arrangement. Avoid keeping multiple unrelated Pink Skunk Clownfish together in smaller aquariums, and use caution when mixing them with more aggressive clownfish species.
Boisterous or highly territorial tankmates may intimidate this comparatively mild species and prevent it from feeding comfortably.
Reef Compatibility
The Pink Skunk Clownfish is reef safe and does not normally consume or deliberately damage corals, clams, or ornamental reef invertebrates.
When no anemone is present, an individual may adopt certain corals as a substitute host. Persistent rubbing or nesting behavior can occasionally irritate fleshy LPS corals or other colonies, although direct coral feeding is not typical.
If a host anemone is maintained, provide sufficient space between the anemone and neighboring corals because the anemone itself may move or sting nearby sessile animals.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable salinity, temperature, and overall water quality are more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to achieve exact numbers. Consistent maintenance and good oxygenation will help support long-term health.
Common Considerations
-
Peaceful temperament: This species is generally less aggressive than many clownfish but may still defend its host or nesting territory.
-
Adult size: Pink Skunk Clownfish reach approximately 4 inches and should be housed according to their mature size rather than purchase size.
-
Pair management: A single specimen or established pair is generally preferable to maintaining several unrelated individuals.
-
Host anemone optional: An anemone is not required for successful aquarium care, even though this species naturally forms close associations with host anemones.
-
Aggressive tankmates: Avoid highly territorial or boisterous fish that may intimidate the Pink Skunk Clownfish or prevent it from feeding normally.
