Caring for Branching Corals
Branching corals are stony corals, so they build their skeletons from calcium and carbonate and do best in a stable, established reef. These are the water conditions in our hard coral quick guide:
| Parameter | Recommended Range |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 75–80°F |
| Salinity | 1.025–1.026 |
| pH | 8.1–8.4 |
| Calcium | 420–440 ppm |
| Alkalinity | 8–9.5 dKH |
| Magnesium | 1300–1450 ppm |
| Nitrate | <10 ppm |
| Phosphate | <0.10 ppm |
Placement: Mount each coral using IC gel glue, putty, or a combination of both. Place it on a rock or ledge that receives direct lighting and ample flow, with room to branch outward.
Lighting and flow: Branching corals generally need moderate or stronger lighting and moderate to high water flow to hold their color. Needs vary by species, so once your corals arrive, identify each one and fine-tune its position. Increase light intensity gradually to avoid bleaching.
Feeding: We recommend feeding hard corals a combination of zooplankton, phytoplankton, amino acids, and other organic proteins. A daily broadcast feeding while return and circulation pumps are stopped helps corals capture the nutrients they need. Our recommended feeds include Reef Genetics lab-cultured phytoplankton, Polyp Lab ReefRoids, and Benepets.
Acclimation: Float each bag to equalize temperature, then slowly add your tank water before mounting the corals.
