My Japanese Toadstool keeps “waxing over” and closing for days. Is this normal, and how can I speed up recovery?
Yes—Sarcophyton periodically sheds a waxy film to slough algae and detritus. Provide strong, variable flow across the cap to lift the film, and maintain fresh activated carbon to keep the water clear of released compounds. Avoid handling during this phase. If shedding lasts over a week, check for low flow, unstable alkalinity, or pests irritating the cap.
Why did my toadstool stop extending polyps after I added new SPS frags?
Chemical warfare is likely. Sarcophyton can both release and react to terpenes from other corals. Increase carbon use and skimming, add a small water change schedule, and give physical space with good crossflow. Stabilize alk and pH, and avoid direct laminar blast. Polyps often return within a week once dissolved organics drop.
Can I host clownfish in this coral, or will it cause problems?
Some clownfish will adopt large Sarcophyton caps. Light, occasional hosting is usually fine, but persistent rubbing can keep polyps retracted and slow growth. If irritation persists, redirect flow to deter the clowns, raise the coral higher, or provide an alternative host (e.g., large Euphyllia or a substitute). Watch for mucus buildup where clowns nestle.
My green-polyped toadstool is fading under high light. Should I move it or change nutrients?
These corals photoadapt; sudden high PAR can bleach tips while ultra-low nutrients starve zooxanthellae. Reduce light 20–30% or raise the coral, then ramp intensity over 2–3 weeks. Keep modest nitrate (5–15 ppm) and phosphate (0.03–0.1 ppm). Gentle amino or fine-particulate feeds can help recovery, but prioritize stability and flow over heavy feeding.
