Description

Fuzzy Chitons are unique and highly useful additions to saltwater aquarium clean up crews due to their unusual armored appearance, strong gripping ability, and constant algae-grazing behavior. These hardy mollusks are not snails, but close relatives with eight overlapping shell plates surrounded by a tough, leathery girdle that gives them a flattened, prehistoric look. Fuzzy Chitons spend most of their time firmly attached to rockwork and aquarium glass, where they graze on film algae, diatoms, turf algae, and other soft encrusting algae. Their low-profile body allows them to clean tight areas of rockwork while remaining peaceful and reef safe.

Introduction to Fuzzy Chiton (Armored Algae Grazer & Unique Cleanup Crew Mollusk)

Fuzzy Chitons (Chiton sp. / Acanthopleura sp.) are fascinating marine mollusks known for their eight armored plates, strong muscular foot, and fuzzy-looking outer girdle. Their appearance can vary from tan, brown, gray, greenish, or mottled depending on species, algae growth, collection area, and aquarium conditions. Some individuals may appear especially “fuzzy” because algae, biofilm, or fine debris can grow along the outer girdle, helping them blend into rockwork.

In the wild, chitons are commonly found on hard reef surfaces, rocks, rubble, and intertidal zones where they cling tightly to surfaces and scrape algae using a specialized rasping mouthpart called a radula. This natural behavior makes them especially useful in aquariums with mature rockwork and steady algae growth.

Care Requirements

Care Level: Easy – Hardy when kept in stable, established aquariums
Minimum Tank Size: 10+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Requires live rock, hard grazing surfaces, mature biofilm, and stable reef parameters

Fuzzy Chitons do best in established saltwater aquariums with plenty of rockwork, glass, and hard surfaces to graze. They are strong clingers and should never be forcibly pulled from rock or glass, as this can injure or kill them. If they need to be moved, wait until they release naturally or gently work a thin card beneath the foot to slowly break the seal.

Diet & Nutrition

Fuzzy Chitons are herbivorous grazers that feed primarily on algae and biofilm.

Diet: Herbivorous – Prefers film algae, diatoms, turf algae, biofilm, and soft encrusting algae
Recommended Foods:
Naturally occurring algae on live rock and aquarium glass
Diatoms and film algae
Soft turf algae and biofilm
Algae wafers or dried seaweed if natural food sources are low

Fuzzy Chitons are best suited for mature aquariums with steady algae availability. They are not usually aggressive nuisance algae removers in the same way as large turbo snails, but they are excellent routine grazers for rockwork and glass. In very clean systems, supplemental feeding may be needed to prevent starvation.

Lifespan & Growth Rate

Lifespan: 1-3+ years with proper care
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate – Usually reaches around 1-2 inches, with some individuals growing larger

Fuzzy Chitons remain manageable in most reef aquariums and are less likely to bulldoze frags than large turbo snails or urchins. Maintaining stable calcium and alkalinity levels helps support healthy shell plate and body development over time.

Temperament & Compatibility

Temperament: Peaceful – Does not bother fish, corals, or most reef invertebrates
Reef Safe? Yes – Safe with corals and reef aquariums

Fuzzy Chitons are peaceful algae grazers and are excellent additions to mixed cleanup crews. They can be kept with reef-safe fish, snails, hermit crabs, shrimp, and other peaceful invertebrates. Avoid housing them with known mollusk predators such as triggers, puffers, aggressive wrasses, large crabs, and other animals that may pick at or eat them.

Common Challenges & Considerations

Do Not Pull Them Off Surfaces: Fuzzy Chitons attach very strongly, and forcing them off rock or glass can cause serious injury.
Mostly Nocturnal Grazers: They may be most active at night or during lower-light periods.
Needs Established Algae Growth: Mature rockwork and natural biofilm are important for long-term success.
May Graze Coralline Algae: In some systems, they may rasp at coralline algae along with film algae and biofilm.
Not a Sand Cleaner: Fuzzy Chitons primarily graze hard surfaces rather than stirring or cleaning the sand bed.
Sensitive to Copper: Like most marine invertebrates, they should never be exposed to copper-based medications.
Sensitive to Parameter Swings: Sudden changes in salinity, temperature, pH, or alkalinity can cause stress.

To prevent issues, acclimate them carefully, keep them in established aquariums with natural grazing surfaces, avoid copper exposure, and never forcibly remove them once attached.
