The China Pearl Wrasse is a beautifully patterned saltwater fish known for its contrasting dark upper body, pale lower body, scattered blue spotting, and distinctive eyespots near the rear of the fins. Males develop additional reddish and blue detailing as they mature, giving the species an especially refined appearance in a well-lit reef aquarium. Its coloration, graceful swimming behavior, and constant foraging make it an eye-catching choice for experienced marine aquarists.
Anampses neoguinaicus is native to the tropical western Pacific, where it inhabits coral reefs, reef slopes, rubble zones, and sandy areas adjacent to reef structure. In the aquarium, it spends much of the day cruising around live rock and searching the substrate for small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey.
This is a more demanding marine aquarium fish than many commonly kept wrasses. It is best suited to mature, established reef aquariums with a healthy population of natural microfauna, peaceful tankmates, and a deep enough sand bed for nighttime burial. Careful acclimation and feeding are especially important during the first several weeks.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Expert Only
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Western Pacific
Scientific Name: Anampses neoguinaicus
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature marine aquarium with well-established live rock, open swimming space, and a fine sand bed approximately 2–4 inches deep. The China Pearl Wrasse naturally buries itself in the substrate at night and when frightened, making a suitable sand bed an important part of its long-term habitat.
Rockwork should provide numerous caves, ledges, and sheltered areas while still leaving enough open space for active swimming and foraging. A mature aquarium rich in copepods and other small organisms is strongly preferred because newly introduced specimens often rely heavily on natural prey while adapting to captive foods.
A tightly fitted lid or fine-mesh cover is essential. This species is an accomplished jumper and may leap from the aquarium when startled or chased.
Diet and Feeding
The China Pearl Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally feeds on small crustaceans, worms, mollusks, and other tiny reef organisms.
Offer a varied diet consisting of enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped krill, chopped shrimp, small pieces of marine seafood, and quality frozen carnivore blends. Small sinking or slow-sinking marine pellets may be accepted once the fish is fully established.
New specimens can be reluctant to accept prepared foods, so live foods such as copepods or live enriched brine shrimp may be useful during acclimation. Feed small portions two to three times daily when possible.
Temperament and Tankmates
The China Pearl Wrasse is generally peaceful and can be timid, particularly when first introduced. It should be housed with calm, non-aggressive tankmates that will not intimidate it or prevent it from feeding.
Suitable companions include peaceful tangs, fairy wrasses, flasher wrasses, gobies, blennies, anthias, and other non-aggressive marine fish.
Use caution when keeping multiple Anampses wrasses or similarly shaped species together. Adult males may become territorial toward conspecifics, so a single specimen is generally the simplest choice for most aquariums.
Reef Compatibility
The China Pearl Wrasse is best considered reef safe with caution.
It generally leaves corals alone and can be maintained successfully in mixed reef aquariums. However, its natural feeding behavior includes hunting small invertebrates throughout the rockwork and substrate.
Small ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, snails, fan worms, and other vulnerable invertebrates may be eaten. Clams may also occasionally be investigated or picked at. For this reason, it should not be considered completely safe with valuable mobile invertebrates.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable water quality is especially important during acclimation. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH, and prioritize consistency over chasing exact numbers.
Common Considerations
- Challenging acclimation: Newly imported specimens may be shy and reluctant to accept prepared foods.
- Mature aquarium recommended: Established live rock and a healthy microfauna population can greatly improve feeding opportunities.
- Sand bed required: Provide fine sand deep enough for the wrasse to bury itself completely at night.
- Excellent jumper: A secure mesh lid or fitted aquarium cover is essential.
- Small invertebrates may be hunted: Corals are generally safe, but shrimp, small snails, worms, and other mobile invertebrates may be at risk.
