Captive-Bred Springeri Dottyback

The Springeri Dottyback (Pseudochromis springeri), also known as the Blue-Striped Dottyback, is a compact and striking saltwater fish with a dark blue to nearly black body highlighted by vivid electric-blue markings along the face, head, and fins. Its intense contrast and sleek profile give this small species a dramatic appearance, particularly against bright reef rockwork and coral.

Native to the Red Sea, the Springeri Dottyback inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs where it remains closely associated with coral structures, caves, and crevices. Like other members of the genus, it frequently darts between shelter and open water while searching for small crustaceans, worms, and other animal prey.

Reaching approximately 2.25 inches as an adult, this species remains relatively small but has the confident, territorial personality characteristic of dottybacks. It is hardy, readily accepts meaty aquarium foods, and generally leaves corals untouched, making it an excellent candidate for reef aquariums when its temperament and potential interest in very small ornamental invertebrates are considered.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with substantial rockwork containing caves, crevices, overhangs, and narrow passages. The Springeri Dottyback naturally remains close to reef structure and will typically establish a preferred cave or section of rockwork as its territory.

Leave some open swimming space around the aquascape, as established specimens often become increasingly visible once comfortable. Multiple hiding locations and visual barriers are especially useful in community aquariums because they allow other fish to avoid the dottyback's preferred territory.

Moderate, varied water movement is appropriate. No specialized substrate is required, making this species suitable for sand-bottom, reef-rubble, and bare-bottom systems.

A tightly fitted aquarium cover is strongly recommended. Dottybacks are capable jumpers and may escape through small openings when startled or chased.

Diet and Feeding

The Springeri Dottyback is a carnivore that naturally feeds on small crustaceans, worms, zooplankton, and other animal prey.

Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped shrimp, small krill, and quality frozen carnivore or plankton blends. Appropriately sized marine pellets can also be incorporated once readily accepted.

Feed once or twice daily, providing portions appropriate for its small mouth. A varied marine-based diet helps maintain strong coloration and good body condition.

This species may also hunt small worms and crustaceans living within the rockwork, including some nuisance organisms.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Springeri Dottyback is semi-aggressive and can become territorial around caves and preferred sections of rockwork. Its small adult size should not be mistaken for a timid temperament.

Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized clownfish, cardinalfish, blennies, gobies, wrasses, dwarf angelfish, and other community marine fish capable of tolerating a confident neighbor.

Keeping a single specimen is the simplest arrangement for most aquariums. Use caution with other dottybacks and similarly shaped cave-dwelling fish, as they may be viewed as direct territorial competitors.

Very timid or extremely small fish may be chased, particularly if they repeatedly enter the dottyback's chosen shelter.

Reef Compatibility

The Springeri Dottyback is reef safe with caution.

It does not normally consume or damage soft corals, LPS corals, SPS corals, clams, or other sessile reef organisms.

The primary concern is very small ornamental invertebrates. Tiny shrimp, juvenile crustaceans, and worms may be hunted or consumed. Larger established ornamental shrimp are generally at lower risk, although individual behavior can vary.

Snails and larger hermit crabs are typically ignored.
