Blue Throat Triggerfish - Female

The female Blue Throat Triggerfish is an elegant saltwater fish with a soft gray to brown-gray body covered in fine iridescent blue spots. A vivid blue ring around the eye adds contrast to her understated coloration. Unlike the male, the female does not develop the namesake blue throat or the same pronounced yellow edging along the fins, giving her a more subtle, refined appearance.

Also known as the Bluejaw Triggerfish or Gilded Triggerfish, Xanthichthys auromarginatus is native to the Indo-Pacific, ranging from Mauritius through northern Australia to Hawaii and the Society Islands, north to southern Japan. It inhabits current-swept reef ledges and outer drop-offs, often swimming several feet above the bottom in loose groups. Adults can reach approximately 12 inches. 

Unlike many bottom-feeding triggerfish, this species feeds primarily on zooplankton in open water. Its comparatively restrained behavior around corals makes it one of the more suitable triggerfish for a carefully managed reef aquarium, although small ornamental invertebrates may still be at risk. It is equally impressive in a large fish-only aquarium.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with a long swimming footprint and extensive open water through the middle and upper portions of the display. Position live rock primarily along the back and sides, creating large caves, overhangs, and secure crevices without restricting the main swimming lanes.

Strong, varied water movement and excellent oxygenation suit this current-associated species. Efficient filtration and protein skimming are important because a full-grown triggerfish requires frequent, substantial feeding and produces considerable waste.

Rockwork should be stable and large enough to provide a secure nighttime retreat. Triggerfish can raise and lock their first dorsal spine inside a crevice, making them difficult for predators—or aquarists—to remove. Use a secure lid or mesh cover, as newly introduced or startled specimens may jump.

A female can be maintained alone, but a male-female pair requires a substantially larger aquarium with additional open swimming room and multiple retreats.

Diet and Feeding

The Blue Throat Triggerfish is primarily a zooplanktivore in nature, forming loose aggregations above current-swept reef slopes while feeding heavily on drifting copepods and other planktonic prey. 

Offer a varied carnivorous diet that includes mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, chopped clam, mussel, squid, shrimp, scallop, and quality frozen marine blends. Slow-sinking carnivore pellets can also be included once the fish is accustomed to prepared foods.

Feed two or three moderate portions daily. Allow some food to drift through the water column to support its natural feeding behavior. Occasional hard-shelled marine foods may help provide feeding enrichment and natural tooth wear, but freshwater feeder fish should not be used.

Temperament and Tankmates

The female Blue Throat Triggerfish is generally less aggressive than many other triggerfish, but it remains a large, confident species capable of defending its territory. It may become more assertive as it matures, particularly around food or a preferred cave.

Suitable tankmates include tangs, rabbitfish, larger angelfish, butterflyfish, robust wrasses, groupers too large to be swallowed, and other medium-to-large marine fish with compatible temperaments. Avoid very timid species that may be intimidated or prevented from feeding.

Keep one specimen in most aquariums. A female may be housed with a male in a very large system, but introductions should be supervised carefully. Use caution with other triggerfish, especially similarly shaped species competing for the same territory.

Reef Compatibility

The Blue Throat Triggerfish is reef safe with caution. Its natural diet is centered on zooplankton rather than coral tissue, and healthy stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and anemones are generally ignored. This feeding ecology makes Xanthichthys triggerfish more suitable for reef displays than most members of the triggerfish family. 

Small ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, exposed worms, and other bite-sized invertebrates may still be investigated or consumed. Larger established cleaner shrimp sometimes coexist successfully, but they should not be considered guaranteed safe. Very small fish may also be at risk from a mature specimen.

Secure loose coral fragments and lightweight decorations, as a large triggerfish may accidentally shift them while swimming, feeding, or entering a retreat.

• Provide frequent meaty meals: Its natural plankton-feeding behavior is best supported with two or three varied feedings daily.

• Use care during capture: Powerful teeth and locking dorsal spines make a rigid specimen container safer than a fine-mesh net.
