Live Rock Calculator
The live rock calculator estimates how many pounds of live rock you need for your reef tank. Enter your water volume and choose an aquascape density to get a target weight. Live rock is the biological and structural foundation of a reef, hosting the bacteria that process waste and giving corals and fish a natural home.
Modern aquascaping favors open, airy structure over packed walls of rock, so today’s tanks often use less than the classic 1 to 2 pounds per gallon. Less rock means better flow, easier maintenance and more room for corals to grow into the negative space.
Formula: Live rock (lb) ≈ gallons × 0.5 to 1.5 depending on aquascape density
Frequently Asked Questions
How much live rock do I need?
A common guideline is about 1 pound of rock per gallon, but modern aquascapes often use less, around half a pound per gallon, for open structure and better flow. Select a density above and enter your volume to get a target in pounds.
Can I use dry rock instead of live rock?
Yes. Many reefers build the aquascape from dry or base rock and seed it with a smaller amount of live rock or bacteria. It is cheaper, pest-free and becomes live over a few months as bacteria and coralline algae establish.
How much rock is too much?
Packing a tank with rock restricts flow, traps detritus and leaves less room for corals and fish to grow. A lighter, open aquascape with negative space is easier to maintain and usually looks better as it fills in.
