For aquariums with nitrates below 50 ppm, start with half the dose for the first 3–4 weeks, increasing weekly thereafter if needed.

BioPellet Calculator

BioPellets provide a natural and effective way to reduce nitrates and phosphates in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. By fueling beneficial bacteria, they help control algae growth, improve water clarity, and promote a healthier tank environment with less manual maintenance.

Our calculator helps you determine the right amount of BioPellets to use, whether you are starting fresh or adjusting an existing dose.

Start Slow: Recommended Usage

Note: The calculated amounts are suggested starting points and should be adjusted gradually based on your tank’s nutrient levels.

For systems with nitrates below 50 ppm, we recommend starting with half the calculated dose for the first 3–4 weeks, gradually increasing weekly while monitoring nutrient levels.

Avoid adding the full amount all at once, as rapid nutrient changes can stress corals, fish, or plants. Keep the pellets gently tumbling in a media reactor to prevent clumping, biofilm buildup, or flow blockages.

Supported Product

Reef Genetics BioPellets

100% PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates) resin made from corn, free of fillers and harmful chemicals. Safe for freshwater, planted, saltwater, and reef tanks. Recommended starting dose: 1 cup per 50 gallons in a fluidized reactor.

When to Use BioPellets

  • Reduce elevated nitrate and phosphate levels
  • Improve water clarity and reduce algae growth
  • Support a stable, low-nutrient environment for fish and corals
  • Reduce the need for manual water changes or chemical treatments

Tips for Best Results

  • Rinse and soak pellets in RODI or tank water for up to 24 hours before use to prevent floating
  • Use in a fluidized media reactor with gentle tumbling motion to avoid clumping
  • Direct reactor outflow to your protein skimmer for maximum nutrient export
  • Add or replace pellets as needed. Do not let them dissolve below half the original amount
  • Adjust reactor flow if pellets are fracturing and reduce flow if needed
