Description
Micro brittle stars (Ophiuroidea sp.) are small, nocturnal detritivores that work within live rock crevices and sand beds to consume uneaten food, detritus, and organic waste. Aquacultured in-house at Top Shelf Aquatics, these specimens are parasite-free and acclimate quickly to established reef systems. Sold in packs sized to colonize tanks up to 100 gallons, with 10 individuals recommended per 100 gallons. They are completely reef safe and will reproduce naturally in most home aquariums. They also serve as a sustainable live feed source for Bongo Shrimp (Phyllognathia ceratophthalma).

Micro brittle stars are among the most practical cleanup crew additions for a mature reef tank. Reaching only 1/2 to 1 inch at adulthood, they access spaces that larger invertebrates cannot — deep within live rock channels, under rockwork, and throughout sand beds — consuming detritus, uneaten feed, and organic matter before it can degrade water quality. Their nocturnal habit means they do their work largely out of sight, extending flexible arms at night to sweep particles from the water column and surrounding surfaces.

All micro brittle stars sold by Top Shelf Aquatics are aquacultured in-house through TSA Farm Systems. This production model eliminates the parasite and hitchhiker risk associated with wild-collected specimens and results in animals already conditioned to captive water parameters. Because they are scavengers rather than predators, no dedicated feeding regimen is required in an established reef — they subsist on the organic load already present in the system.

Compatibility is broad. Micro brittle stars are peaceful toward corals, fish, shrimp, snails, and other cleanup crew members. They do not bother sessile invertebrates and pose no risk to a functioning reef community. For hobbyists keeping Bongo Shrimp, they also function as a convenient and renewable live food source. Population growth is gradual, but in stable conditions these stars will reproduce and self-sustain over time.

For meaningful detritus control and long-term colonization, a starting density of 10 individuals per 100 gallons is recommended. They perform best in tanks with ample live rock structure and a stable sand bed. As with all invertebrates, they are sensitive to abrupt swings in salinity or temperature, so acclimation should be done carefully and water parameters kept consistent. Mature systems with established biological filtration are the most suitable environment.

Overview

Scavenge. Colonize. Self-Sustain.

Micro brittle stars are a low-maintenance, high-impact cleanup crew addition for reef tanks with live rock and sand beds. Here is what makes them worth keeping.

  • Aquacultured In-House

    • Bred in TSA Farm Systems — not wild collected
    • Free of parasites and unwanted hitchhikers
    • Conditioned to captive reef water parameters
  • Effective Detritus Control

    • Accesses rock crevices and substrate inaccessible to larger cleaners
    • Consumes uneaten feed, organic waste, and microalgae
    • Nocturnal activity means continuous passive cleaning
  • Reef Safe and Self-Sustaining

    • Completely safe for corals, fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates
    • Reproduces naturally in most home aquariums
    • 10 individuals recommended per 100 gallons for colonization
