Collonista snails are one of the more underappreciated cleanup crew options available to reef keepers. Tiny in stature — typically topping out near half an inch — they punch well above their weight as biofilm and diatom controllers, grazing rock surfaces and glass throughout the night. Because they are nocturnal, you may rarely see them during daylight hours, but their contribution to surface cleanliness is consistent and cumulative. Unlike larger snails that can topple frags or disturb aquascaping, Collonista snails move through a tank without disrupting corals, fish, or other invertebrates.
What sets TSA's Collonista snails apart is the sourcing. These are aquacultured in-house at TSA Farm Systems rather than wild-collected. That means each snail arrives parasite-free, acclimated to standard reef water chemistry, and conditioned to captive feeding conditions. The result is a noticeably smoother transition compared to wild-caught specimens, which can carry hitchhiker pests or struggle to adapt to aquarium environments.
One of the most practical qualities of Collonista snails is their capacity to breed in home reef aquariums under normal conditions. Populations establish themselves gradually, providing a self-sustaining level of algae control that doesn't require periodic restocking. This makes them particularly cost-effective over time and well-suited to aquarists who prefer building a stable, functional cleanup crew rather than continuously replacing individuals.
Collonista snails are well-suited to reef tanks of 10 gallons or larger, provided live rock and open glass surfaces are available for grazing. They thrive wherever diatoms or film algae are present and will accept supplemental seaweed sheets when natural food sources run thin. The main compatibility consideration is predatory fish — triggers, puffers, and large wrasses are known to target small snails and should not be kept in the same system. Water parameters should fall within standard reef ranges: 74–80°F, specific gravity 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH.
