The Zanzibar Coral Banded Shrimp (Stenopus zanzibaricus) is a highly territorial boxer shrimp from the Western Indian Ocean. It is reef safe and moderate to care for. See the Zanzibar Coral Banded Shrimp care guide, or compare it with the classic Coral Banded Shrimp.
Coral Banded Shrimp, also known as boxer shrimp, are one of the mostly commonly kept shrimp in the reefkeeping hobby. These shrimp, identified by the bright white and red bands on their bodies and large pincer claws, look considerably different from most other reef shrimp. As their appearance suggests, Coral Banded Shrimp are substantially more aggressive than most other shrimp species, however they only pose a threat to other smaller invertebrates who intrude on their territory. These shrimp are nocturnal and prefer an aquarium with plenty of caves and ledges to hide in. During the molting process, these shrimp can occasionally hide for one to two days as their new shell hardens. These shrimp are very hardy and are suitable for most saltwater aquariums.Quick Care Guide

About the Zanzibar Coral Banded Shrimp
The Zanzibar Coral Banded Shrimp is a smaller, less common relative of the classic coral banded shrimp. It shares the same long white antennae and banded claws, but its body carries a yellow tint that sets it apart from the red-and-white Stenopus hispidus.
Tank Requirements
Provide caves, ledges, and overhangs where it can claim a home base. It usually stays near the entrance of its shelter, venturing out to scavenge and occasionally clean passing fish.
Diet and Feeding
Offer small meaty foods such as mysis, chopped shrimp, krill, and sinking pellets two to four times per week. Target-feeding near its cave keeps it from competing with fish or stealing food from corals.
Temperament and Tankmates
Keep one Zanzibar shrimp per tank, or a confirmed mated pair. Coral banded shrimp are aggressive toward other Stenopus species and may harass smaller cleaner shrimp in tight quarters.
Most peaceful and semi-aggressive fish are compatible. Avoid hawkfish, lionfish, triggerfish, puffers, and large wrasses, which may prey on shrimp.
Reef Compatibility
This shrimp is reef safe with corals and clams. The main caution is its territorial behavior toward other small shrimp.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Drip acclimate slowly and keep salinity steady for healthy molts. Invertebrates are highly sensitive to copper, and copper-treated water or medications should never be added to an aquarium that houses them.
Common Considerations
-
One per tank: Unless you have a mated pair, keep a single banded shrimp.
-
Lost claws regrow: Missing limbs return over successive molts.
-
Expect hiding after molts: It may disappear for a day or two while its shell hardens.
-
Avoid copper: Never treat a tank containing shrimp with copper.
