The Coral Banded Shrimp, also known as the boxer shrimp, is one of the most commonly kept shrimp in the reefkeeping hobby. Bright red and white bands and oversized pincer claws make it look very different from most other reef shrimp, and its hardy nature makes it suitable for most saltwater aquariums.

Appearance
They are easy to identify by the bright white and red bands running along their bodies and their large pincer claws. That bold look sets them apart from the cleaner and peppermint shrimp many hobbyists keep, and it makes them a striking addition to rockwork with open caves and overhangs.
Temperament and Compatibility
As their appearance suggests, these shrimp are substantially more aggressive than most other shrimp species. They generally pose a threat only to smaller invertebrates that intrude on their territory, so plan your cleanup crew and other shrimp with that in mind. In the hobby, keeping more than one in the same tank commonly leads to fighting unless you are adding an established pair, so a single specimen is the safer choice for most systems.
As with most ornamental shrimp, avoid housing them with fish known to eat crustaceans, and never expose them to copper-based medications.
Habitat and Behavior
These shrimp are nocturnal and prefer an aquarium with plenty of caves and ledges. Expect yours to spend much of the day tucked into the rockwork and to become more active after the lights go out. Building your aquascape with a few secure overhangs gives the shrimp a home base and helps it settle in.
Molting
Like all crustaceans, these shrimp grow by shedding their exoskeleton. During the molting process, they can occasionally hide for one to two days while the new shell hardens. If your shrimp disappears for a short time, this is normal behavior, and the extra cover in your rockwork helps keep it safe while it is vulnerable.
Feeding
Coral banded shrimp are opportunistic scavengers in the aquarium. They will typically pick at leftover meaty foods, and you can target feed small portions of frozen or sinking meaty foods near their cave so they get a share at feeding time.
