Two Spot Bristletooth Tang

The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang (Ctenochaetus binotatus) is a distinctive surgeonfish featuring a warm brown to orange-brown body covered with fine blue lines and spots. Its common name comes from the two prominent dark spots positioned near the rear bases of the dorsal and anal fins. Mature individuals also develop a striking bluish ring around the eye, while juveniles often display a brighter yellow tail that darkens with age.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species ranges from East Africa across to the Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to eastern Australia and New Caledonia. It inhabits coral and rubble areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, where it spends much of the day methodically grazing rock surfaces for films of algae, microorganisms, and organic detritus.

Reaching approximately 8–9 inches as an adult, the Two Spot Bristletooth Tang combines manageable size with the constant grazing behavior characteristic of the Ctenochaetus genus. It is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish, highly useful as a natural grazer, and well suited to established reef aquariums as well as larger fish-only marine systems.

Tank Requirements

A 100-gallon or larger established saltwater aquarium provides appropriate long-term housing for an adult Two Spot Bristletooth Tang. Horizontal swimming room is particularly important, so an aquarium with a long footprint is preferable to a taller system with limited swimming length.

Provide abundant mature live rock for grazing along with caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas where the fish can retreat. At the same time, leave generous open swimming lanes around and above the rockwork.

A mature aquarium is strongly preferred because naturally established films of algae and organic material provide important opportunities for continuous grazing. Sterile or newly established rockwork offers considerably less natural forage.

Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are appropriate. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended.

Diet and Feeding

The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang is a specialized grazer. Its comb-like teeth are adapted for scraping thin films of algae, microorganisms, and detrital material from hard reef surfaces rather than tearing away large pieces of macroalgae.

Provide dried nori and other marine algae regularly, along with spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets, and frozen preparations formulated for grazing marine fish. Mature live rock should provide additional natural feeding opportunities throughout the day.

Small amounts of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other marine-based foods can be included for dietary variety, particularly in community aquariums, but plant-based foods should remain an important part of the diet.

Several smaller feedings throughout the day are preferable when practical. Maintaining good body condition is particularly important with bristletooth tangs, which naturally spend much of their waking period grazing.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish but can become territorial toward other surgeonfish, particularly species with similar body shapes or feeding habits.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, angelfish, rabbitfish, anthias, gobies, blennies, and other appropriately sized community marine fish.

Keeping a single bristletooth tang is generally the simplest arrangement. Combining it with other tangs requires a substantially larger aquarium, multiple feeding areas, and careful introduction planning.

When several surgeonfish are planned, differences in genus, body shape, and feeding niche may reduce competition, but aggression should still be monitored closely.

Reef Compatibility

The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang is considered reef safe and does not normally consume healthy SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, clams, shrimp, snails, or other established ornamental invertebrates.

Its constant scraping and grazing behavior is primarily directed toward algae, microbial films, and organic material growing on rock and other hard surfaces.

This natural feeding behavior makes the species especially appealing in established reef aquariums where continuous grazing is desirable. Loosely mounted coral frags should still be secured because an active adult may accidentally dislodge them while feeding around the rockwork.
