Strawberry Crabs are colorful and unusual ornamental crabs known for their bright pink to reddish coloration, small white spots, and active nighttime foraging behavior. Also known as Hawaiian Strawberry Crabs or Red Boxing Crabs, Neoliomera pubescens are small reef-associated crabs that spend much of their time hiding in rockwork during the day and emerging after dark to graze and scavenge. Their bold color and compact size make them appealing additions to mature saltwater aquariums, but they should be kept with caution around very small fish, tiny ornamental shrimp, or delicate invertebrates. When well fed and provided with plenty of hiding places, Strawberry Crabs can be interesting, personable additions to peaceful reef or fish-only systems.
Introduction to Strawberry Crab (Neoliomera pubescens) — Colorful Reef Scavenger & Nocturnal Display Crab
Strawberry Crabs (Neoliomera pubescens) are small marine crabs from the family Xanthidae, recognized for their rounded body shape, bright pink coloration, and scattered white spotting. In the wild, they are found in shallow reef environments, rocky crevices, coral rubble, and algae-rich areas where they can hide during the day and forage at night. Their front claws are adapted for picking at algae, detritus, and small food particles from rock surfaces.
In the aquarium, this natural behavior gives important insight into their care. Strawberry Crabs do best in mature aquariums with live rock, caves, crevices, and enough natural algae or supplemental food to support their omnivorous diet. They should not be treated as a heavy-duty cleanup crew crab, but rather as a small ornamental scavenger that may help pick at algae and leftover food.
Care Requirements
Care Level: Easy to Moderate – Hardy when kept in stable, established aquariums
Minimum Tank Size: 20+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Requires live rock, caves, crevices, shaded areas, stable parameters, and peaceful tankmates
Strawberry Crabs do best in mature saltwater aquariums with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. They are often nocturnal and may remain hidden during the day, especially when first introduced. Providing caves, overhangs, and rock crevices will help them feel secure and encourage natural foraging behavior after lights out.
Diet & Nutrition
Strawberry Crabs are omnivorous scavengers that feed on algae, detritus, leftover foods, and small meaty items.
Diet: Omnivorous – Eats algae, detritus, leftover food, seaweed, and small meaty foods
Recommended Foods:
Naturally occurring algae on live rock
Detritus and leftover fish food
Dried seaweed or nori
Algae wafers
Frozen mysis shrimp
Brine shrimp
Finely chopped seafood
Small sinking omnivore or carnivore pellets
Strawberry Crabs should be fed regularly and should not be expected to survive only on scraps in very clean aquariums. Keeping them well fed may help reduce opportunistic behavior toward tiny shrimp, very small fish, or weakened invertebrates.
Lifespan & Growth Rate
Lifespan: 2-4+ years with proper care
Growth Rate: Moderate – Can grow up to about 2 inches
Strawberry Crabs remain relatively small compared to many marine crabs, making them suitable for mature reef aquariums with appropriate tankmates. Like other crustaceans, they grow by molting and require stable water parameters to molt successfully.
Temperament & Compatibility
Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Peaceful – Generally non-aggressive, but opportunistic if underfed
Reef Safe? With caution – Usually safe with corals, but may pose a risk to very small shrimp, tiny fish, or weakened invertebrates
Strawberry Crabs are generally safe with most corals and peaceful fish, but individual behavior can vary. They are best kept with tankmates that are not small enough to be viewed as prey. Avoid housing them with crab predators such as triggers, puffers, hawkfish, large wrasses, lionfish, large crabs, or other animals that may eat small crustaceans.
Common Challenges & Considerations
Reef Safe With Caution: Strawberry Crabs are usually coral safe, but may investigate very small shrimp, tiny fish, weakened animals, or meaty foods if underfed.
Mostly Nocturnal: They may hide during the day and become active after lights out.
Needs Hiding Places: Rock caves, crevices, rubble zones, and shaded areas help them feel secure.
Not a Heavy Algae Solution: They may pick at algae, but should not be relied on to solve major algae outbreaks.
Individual Behavior Can Vary: Like many crabs, some specimens may be more opportunistic than others.
Molting Sensitivity: Sudden changes in salinity, pH, or alkalinity can cause stress during molting.
Sensitive to Copper: Like all marine crabs, they should never be exposed to copper-based medications.
Confirm Identification: Several small pink or red crabs may appear in the aquarium trade, and not all are as reef-compatible as Neoliomera pubescens.
To prevent issues, acclimate carefully, provide plenty of hiding places, keep them well fed, avoid copper exposure, and monitor behavior around very small ornamental shrimp or tiny bottom-dwelling fish.
