FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Is the Ruby Red Dragonet reef safe with corals and invertebrates?

Yes, it is completely reef safe and will not harm corals, clams, or other invertebrates. Its diet consists entirely of tiny crustaceans such as copepods and amphipods.

What tank size and maturity does this dragonet need?

A single adult needs at least 30 gallons, with 55 gallons or more for a pair. Maturity matters even more: the system should be six to eight months old with an established copepod and amphipod population.

Can this dragonet be fed frozen or prepared foods?

Some individuals, especially captive-bred specimens, will accept target-fed frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, calanus, or finely chopped mysis. A steady live pod supply, ideally from a refugium, is still essential for long-term success.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Ruby Red Dragonet, Synchiropus sycorax, is a spectacularly colored small marine aquarium fish distinguished by its brilliant ruby-red body, contrasting white spots, yellow underside, and elaborately patterned fins. Males are especially striking, developing a taller, more ornate first dorsal fin that can be displayed during courtship or territorial interactions. Its unusual coloration and deliberate, hopping movement across the aquascape make it an exceptionally engaging fish for established reef aquariums.

Native to the Philippines in the Western Pacific, Synchiropus sycorax occurs around deeper reef habitats with broken coral rubble and outcrops of soft and stony corals. Rather than spending much time in open water, it remains close to the substrate and reef structure, continuously searching for tiny crustaceans and other microfauna.

Although peaceful and genuinely reef safe, the Ruby Red Dragonet is best suited to experienced aquarists because of its specialized feeding requirements. A mature saltwater aquarium with abundant live rock and a healthy, renewable copepod population is far more important to its long-term success than simply providing sufficient swimming space.

Tank Requirements

A mature, biologically established aquarium is essential. Provide abundant live rock, rubble zones, caves, and protected crevices that support populations of copepods and other small crustaceans. Open areas of sand or fine substrate give the fish additional space to forage while allowing its natural bottom-oriented behavior.

A refugium can be extremely valuable because it provides a protected area where copepods can reproduce without constant predation. Tanks containing multiple pod-eating fish require especially careful consideration because even a seemingly abundant population can be depleted over time.

Low to moderate flow along the substrate is ideal, with calmer areas around the rockwork where the dragonet can hunt comfortably. A secure lid is recommended because dragonets can jump when startled.

Diet and Feeding

The primary challenge with this species is nutrition. Ruby Red Dragonets are specialized micropredators that spend much of the day picking tiny crustaceans from rock, rubble, and substrate. A sustainable population of live copepods should be considered a core part of their captive diet rather than an occasional supplement.

Offer live copepods and other appropriately sized marine microcrustaceans regularly. Some individuals may also accept enriched live brine shrimp, frozen cyclops, small frozen copepods, finely chopped mysis shrimp, or other small frozen marine foods. Acceptance of prepared foods varies considerably, and frozen or pellet foods should not be assumed to replace a healthy live-pod population.

Because dragonets naturally feed repeatedly throughout the day, small frequent feedings are preferable when supplementing with prepared foods. Monitor body condition closely and make sure faster tankmates are not consuming food before the dragonet can reach it.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Ruby Red Dragonet has a peaceful temperament and generally ignores unrelated fish. It is best housed with calm community species that will not bully it or aggressively compete for food.

Avoid excessive competition from other dedicated copepod predators unless the aquarium and refugium are capable of supporting them. Other mandarins, scooter dragonets, and highly efficient pod-feeding fish can significantly reduce the available natural food supply.

Males can be aggressive toward other males of the same species. A single specimen is the simplest arrangement, while a properly identified male-female pair may be maintained in an appropriately established aquarium with sufficient food resources. Multiple males should be avoided.

Reef Compatibility

The Ruby Red Dragonet is reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, or other sessile reef organisms. It is also generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails.

Its natural feeding behavior does involve consuming copepods, amphipods, and other very small crustaceans within the reef ecosystem, but this does not make it a threat to typical ornamental invertebrates. Its peaceful behavior and coral-safe feeding habits make it particularly attractive for mature reef aquariums.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable, mature aquarium conditions are particularly important for dragonets. Maintain consistent temperature, salinity, and water chemistry rather than continually adjusting parameters to reach exact numbers.

Common Considerations

  • A mature aquarium with a substantial, renewable copepod population is essential for long-term success.

  • Do not assume a specimen will accept frozen foods or pellets; some individuals remain strongly dependent on live microcrustaceans.

  • Avoid excessive competition from other mandarins, dragonets, wrasses, or other efficient pod-feeding fish.

  • Males can be territorial toward other males, although the species is peaceful toward most unrelated tankmates.

  • Its very small adult size does not make it a beginner fish; specialized feeding requirements are the primary husbandry challenge.
