Installing an aquarium doesn’t just transform a room. It changes the whole feeling of your home, creating a living focal point that draws people in and makes every day feel extraordinary.

Getting it right is part design, part engineering, and part biology, and doing any one of those three badly is how people end up with a leak in the drywall, a pump they can hear from the next room, or a beautiful tank that won't keep coral alive.

Top Shelf Aquatics has designed and installed custom aquariums in Central Florida since 2012. We handle the entire build: consultation, 3D design, structural and equipment engineering, plumbing and electrical coordination, installation, cycling, aquascaping, livestock, and the ongoing maintenance that keeps it looking the way it looked on day one.

As custom aquarium builders and aquarium installers, not a tank factory, our value is in aquarium design, engineering, and the biology that keeps the display alive after the invoice is paid.

Residential and commercial. Nano displays to large custom aquariums. Reef, marine, freshwater, and custom saltwater systems built around what you actually want to keep.

How it works

Our Custom Aquarium Installation Process

Six stages. You know what is happening at every one of them.

  1. Custom 3D aquarium rendering beside the finished installation design
    01

    Initial Consultation and Design

We come to you. We look at the space, the sightlines, the traffic pattern, the wall, the floor, and the room the equipment will live in. We talk about what you actually want to keep, because a tank built for SPS corals and a tank built for a shoal of tangs are different machines. You leave the first meeting with custom aquarium design direction, and we produce a 3D rendering so you can see the build in your space before ordering anything.

  2. Engineered aquarium sump, filtration, and plumbing plan
    02

    Engineering and Planning

Structural assessment of the floor and wall. System design covering filtration, flow, lighting, and water management. Equipment selection matched to the livestock plan and your budget. Electrical load and outlet placement. Plumbing routing and drain access. A written timeline and a firm scope.

  3. Top Shelf Aquatics installers carrying a large rimless glass aquarium into place
    03

    Professional Installation

Tank and stand placement, professional-grade plumbing with true unions and full leak testing, filtration and sump build-out, lighting mount and programming, ATO and water management, and controller installation and configuration. Everything gets tested wet before it gets trusted.

  4. Installer aquascaping live rock inside a newly installed custom aquarium
    04

    Ecosystem Development

RODI water preparation and salt mixing, cycling the system properly rather than rushing it, aquascaping the rock into a structure that holds coral and lets flow work, and staged livestock introduction in the right order over the right number of weeks.

  5. Top Shelf Aquatics technician preparing aquarium equipment and client guidance
    05

    Client Education and Support

You get trained on your own system: what every piece of equipment does, what the controller is telling you, what normal looks like, and what to do if something is not normal. Plus written maintenance guidelines specific to your build and direct access to your technician.

  6. Top Shelf Aquatics installation truck arriving in a Central Florida neighborhood
    06

    Ongoing Partnership

Most of our installation clients move straight onto a maintenance plan, with preferred rates for install clients. Beyond that: livestock and equipment discounts, seasonal aquascape updates, coral restocking, and upgrades as the system matures.

In-Wall Aquariums

Search for an in-wall fish tank, and you will find plenty of tanks for sale and very few people who will actually engineer one into your house. An in-wall aquarium is the cleanest install there is: glass flush to the wall, no visible equipment, and the entire filtration system hidden in a closet, garage, or utility room behind it. It is also the build with the least room for error, because everything happens inside a structure before the drywall closes.

We handle the full scope: framing and header work with your contractor, floor load verification, viewing panel finishing, remote equipment room design, plumbing runs to and from the display, dedicated electrical, drain access, and access panel planning so the system can actually be serviced after the wall is finished.

Single-sided in-wall, through-wall two-sided displays between rooms, and in-wall builds integrated into millwork and cabinetry.

Homes

Residential Aquarium Installation

Living rooms, entryways, home offices, primary suites, home theaters, and outdoor lanai spaces. Whether you are building a new home in Windermere, remodeling in Winter Park, or adding a display to a house you have lived in for twenty years, the design starts with your space and how you use it.

Most people looking for fish tank installers near them find a handyman who will set a tank on a stand. We work directly with builders, architects, interior designers, and general contractors, and we prefer to be involved before framing when the build is in-wall. Bringing us in at drywall is possible. Bringing us in at blueprint is better and cheaper.

Businesses and institutions

Commercial Aquarium Installation

A well-built aquarium changes how people feel in a space, which is why they show up in the lobbies, waiting rooms, and dining rooms of businesses that care about the experience they deliver.

Commercial work ranges from a professional aquarium setup in a waiting room to a signature display that anchors a lobby. We design and install commercial aquariums for:

  • Corporate offices and lobbies
  • Restaurants, bars, and hospitality
  • Medical, dental, and veterinary practices
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Retail stores and showrooms
  • Salons and spas
  • Schools, universities, and institutional spaces

Commercial builds come with requirements residential builds do not: coordination with facility managers and general contractors, certificates of insurance, code and permitting coordination, after-hours install scheduling to avoid disrupting operations, service access planning, and a maintenance contract from day one because a commercial display cannot be allowed to look bad even for a week.

What a Custom Aquarium Costs in Central Florida

Almost nobody in this market will put a number in front of you before a consultation. Here is how the pricing actually works.

What Drives the Price

Volume and dimensions

Gallons drive glass cost, stand engineering, filtration sizing, and the livestock budget. It is the single largest factor.

Glass or acrylic, and what grade

Standard glass, low-iron Starphire, or acrylic. Rimless and multi-panel viewing add cost.

Where it goes

A freestanding tank against a wall is straightforward. An in-wall, peninsula, or two-sided build carries framing, finishing, and remote equipment room costs on top of the system itself.

System type

A full SPS reef needs more lighting, flow, filtration, and automation than a fish-only or freshwater system of the same size.

Automation level

Controllers, dosers, roller filters, auto water change systems, UV, chillers, and monitoring add both upfront cost and long-term reliability.

Livestock plan

Coral and fish stocking is its own budget line and can be staged over months rather than paid all at once.

Site conditions

Floor reinforcement, new electrical circuits, plumbing runs, and drain access vary by property.

Financing and Split Pay

This is a genuine advantage, and it should be visible above the fold, not buried:

Split-pay options with four easy payments

12-month financing available

PayPal, Shop Pay, and Affirm accepted

No competing aquarium installer in the Orlando or Tampa market offers financing on their service page. See payment and financing options.

The Engineering Behind the Glass

The part of a custom aquarium installation nobody talks about until something goes wrong.

  1. 01

    Floor Load and Structure

Water weighs roughly 8.5 pounds per gallon once you account for salt, rock, sand, and the stand. A 300-gallon display is more than 3,000 pounds concentrated across a few square feet. On a slab, that is usually fine. On a second story, over a crawlspace, or perpendicular to the wrong joist run, it is a real engineering question. We assess it before anything gets ordered, and we bring in a structural engineer when the numbers say we should.

  2. 02

    Plumbing and Flood Prevention

Every drain is designed with redundancy. Emergency overflow standpipes, correctly sized returns, siphon break holes so the display cannot back-drain into the sump during a power outage, true union valves at every serviceable joint, and full leak testing under load before the system is trusted. Most catastrophic aquarium failures are not tank failures. They are plumbing failures that were preventable at install.

  3. 03

    Electrical

Aquariums pull more power than people expect, and they run every hour of every day. We plan dedicated circuits, GFCI protection, drip loops, and outlet placement above waterline, and we coordinate with your electrician on anything that needs to be added.

  4. 04

    Sound

Return pumps, overflows, and skimmers all make noise, and a tank in a bedroom or a quiet office needs to be designed for silence. Overflow style, standpipe design, pump selection, and equipment isolation are all chosen with the room's acoustics in mind.

  5. 05

    Humidity and HVAC

In Central Florida, this matters more than most places. A large open-top display evaporating 5 or more gallons a day puts real moisture into a conditioned space. Canopy design, equipment room ventilation, and evaporation management get planned into the build rather than discovered in year two.

Specified for the system

Equipment and Automation We Install

We are equipment agnostic, and we spec what the system needs, not what we happen to stock most of.

Controllers and monitoring

Neptune Apex, Hydros, with alerts to your phone for temperature, leaks, power loss, and pH

Filtration

Sumps, protein skimmers, roller filters, reactors, refugiums, UV sterilizers

Flow

Return pumps and controllable powerheads with programmed wave patterns

Lighting

Premium LED with spectrum and intensity programming, plus mounting and canopy integration

Water management

Auto top-off systems, RODI units, auto water change systems, dosing pumps for alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements

Temperature

Heaters with controller failsafes, chillers and cooling fans where the load requires it

After the build

Aquarium Maintenance After Installation

The build is the beginning. Systems drift, corals grow, equipment wears, and parameters need correction.

Every installation client is offered a maintenance plan at preferred install-client rates: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly service including RODI water, testing, media, cleaning, and equipment care. The same team that engineered the system maintains it, which means no one is guessing about the plumbing or the equipment history.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Aquarium Installation

How much does a custom aquarium installation cost in Central Florida?

Cost depends on volume, glass type, placement, system type, automation level, and livestock plan. A standard freestanding reef display and a two-sided in-wall build of the same volume can differ substantially. We give you a written, itemized quote after the design consultation, and financing and split-pay options are available.

How long does a custom fish tank installation take?

Typically 2 to 16 weeks. Standard freestanding builds with an in-stock tank run 2 to 4 weeks. Custom-fabricated tanks run 6 to 10 weeks. In-wall and construction-dependent builds run 8 to 16 weeks. Most of the timeline is manufacturing lead time and biological cycling, which cannot be safely compressed.

Can you install an in-wall aquarium in an existing home?

Yes. In-wall installations in existing homes are a large share of our work. We assess the wall, verify it is not load-bearing or engineer around it if it is, confirm floor load, plan the equipment room behind the display, and coordinate framing, electrical, plumbing, and finish work with your contractor or ours.

Do you install both residential and commercial aquariums?

Yes. We install residential displays and commercial systems for offices, restaurants, medical and dental practices, hotels, retail spaces, and institutions across Orlando and Central Florida. Commercial projects include COI documentation, contractor coordination, and after-hours scheduling.

How big can you build?

From nano displays through large custom aquariums and signature commercial builds. Tell us the space and the budget, and we will tell you what is realistic in it.

Do you build the tanks yourselves or order them?

We spec and source tanks from premium manufacturers matched to the build, then engineer, install, plumb, and stock the complete system. Our value is in system design, engineering, installation, and long-term biological success rather than glass fabrication.

Do you supply the fish, coral, and equipment?

Yes. Top Shelf Aquatics is a full retail operation with our own coral and livestock at our Winter Park facility. We quarantine and acclimate everything we add, and we guarantee livestock for 14 days, extended to 30 days on qualifying systems.

Do I have to use your maintenance service after installation?

No, but most clients do. Installation clients get preferred maintenance rates, and having the team that engineered the system maintain it removes a lot of guesswork. If you want to run it yourself, we will train you thoroughly on your own system and remain available for support.

Can you work with my builder, architect, or interior designer?

Yes, and we prefer it. On new construction and renovations, we come in at the planning stage to coordinate framing, floor load, electrical, plumbing, and access. Involving us before drywall saves money on every in-wall project.

Do you offer saltwater and freshwater installations?

Both. Custom saltwater aquarium builds are our specialty and the majority of our work. Full living reefs, fish-only marine systems, coral inserts, and high-tech planted freshwater aquascapes with CO2. Reef and marine are our specialty.

Are custom aquariums safe in a home with kids and pets?

Yes, when the build accounts for it. We use appropriate glass thickness for the volume, engineer stands and in-wall framing for the load, secure lids and canopies, place electrical above the waterline with GFCI protection and drip loops, and design equipment access that is not reachable by a curious child.

What happens if something goes wrong after installation?

Every build comes with written warranties, professional liability coverage, and emergency support protocols. We diagnose and repair equipment failures, and we handle manufacturer warranty claims for you.

Do you take on aquarium relocations or upgrades to an existing system?

Yes. We move existing displays, upgrade filtration and equipment on systems we did not build, and re-aquascape tanks that need a fresh start.

Do you install aquariums outside Florida?

We install and service end to end throughout Central Florida. For larger residential and commercial projects we work throughout the continental United States, coordinating with local trades. Contact us with the project details.
