FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What tank size and equipment should I have ready for an adult?

Plan on at least 75 gallons with open swimming room and rock crevices for shelter. A tight-fitting lid or gap-free canopy is essential, since this wrasse is a proven jumper.

Is the Pink Margin Fairy Wrasse safe for a reef with ornamental invertebrates?

Yes. It is coral safe and does not bother sessile invertebrates, though very small ornamental shrimp and similar crustaceans may occasionally be picked at and should be monitored.

What should I feed it, and how often?

Offer enriched mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped marine meats such as clam, squid, or shrimp, and quality marine flakes or pellets in two to three small meals daily. Verify that a new specimen is already accepting prepared foods before purchase.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.

The female Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is an elegant and active saltwater fish with a softer, more understated appearance than the mature male. Females typically display warm pink to reddish coloration with subtle yellow or orange tones around the face and fins, creating a refined look that stands out beautifully under reef aquarium lighting. Their graceful swimming behavior and peaceful nature make them an excellent addition to established marine aquariums.

Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus is native to the western Pacific, including areas around southern Japan, Indonesia, and Fiji. In the wild, it inhabits outer reef slopes and deeper reef environments where it feeds on small planktonic organisms drifting through the water column. In captivity, it remains active throughout the day and benefits from a combination of open swimming space and secure rockwork.

Female Red Margin Fairy Wrasses are generally peaceful and reef safe, making them well suited to mixed reef aquariums as well as peaceful fish-only systems. They may also be maintained with a compatible male in appropriately sized aquariums, although all fairy wrasse introductions should be planned carefully.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Pacific, including Japan, Indonesia, and Fiji
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus

Tank Requirements

Provide an established marine aquarium with ample open swimming space and well-developed live rock. Caves, ledges, and crevices offer secure places to retreat when startled and provide natural nighttime shelter.

A sand bed is not required, as fairy wrasses generally sleep within rockwork rather than burying themselves. Good water movement, stable water quality, and strong oxygenation are beneficial for long-term health.

A secure mesh lid or tightly fitted aquarium cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are highly capable jumpers and may leap from the aquarium when frightened, chased, or during periods of increased activity.

Diet and Feeding

The Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is primarily a carnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans.

Offer a varied captive diet consisting of enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized pellets or flakes.

Small feedings two to three times per day are ideal when practical. Frequent, varied meals help support the high activity level, body condition, and coloration typical of fairy wrasses.

Temperament and Tankmates

Female Red Margin Fairy Wrasses are generally peaceful and adapt well to community reef aquariums with other non-aggressive marine fish.

Suitable tankmates include gobies, blennies, anthias, cardinalfish, peaceful tangs, and other compatible reef species. They may also coexist with other fairy wrasses when adequate space and hiding areas are provided.

A female can potentially be maintained with a male Red Margin Fairy Wrasse in a sufficiently large aquarium. However, introductions should be monitored closely, and aggressive or highly territorial tankmates should be avoided.

Reef Compatibility

The Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, or ornamental reef invertebrates.

Its natural feeding behavior is focused on small planktonic organisms in the water column rather than coral tissue or larger benthic invertebrates. Established shrimp, snails, and other common reef inhabitants are generally ignored.

This makes the species suitable for mixed reefs, SPS systems, LPS aquariums, and soft coral displays.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 74–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable conditions and avoid rapid changes in salinity, temperature, or pH. Consistency is more important than targeting one exact number within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Jumping risk: A secure mesh lid or fitted cover is essential.
  • Peaceful temperament: Best housed with similarly peaceful community fish.
  • Wrasse compatibility: Use care when introducing multiple fairy wrasses, especially in smaller aquariums.
  • Frequent feeding: Multiple small meals help maintain healthy body condition and activity.
  • Sex change potential: Like many fairy wrasses, females can transition toward male coloration and behavior under certain social conditions.
