Pink Tube Anemones are striking ornamental invertebrates known for their vibrant coloration, long flowing tentacles, and unique tube-dwelling behavior. Unlike traditional host anemones, Tube Anemones are cerianthids that live with their body buried in a soft, protective tube within the sand bed. Their bright pink coloration and graceful tentacle extension make them beautiful display animals, especially in lower-light areas of mature saltwater aquariums. While they can be hardy when properly placed and fed, Pink Tube Anemones should be kept with caution around corals and small or slow-moving tankmates due to their strong stinging tentacles.
Introduction to Pink Tube Anemone (Colorful Sand-Dwelling Display Invertebrate & Nocturnal Carnivore)
Pink Tube Anemones (Cerianthus sp.) are unique, non-photosynthetic marine invertebrates that create a parchment-like tube in the substrate and extend their tentacles into the water column to capture food. In the wild, tube anemones are often found in sandy or muddy areas near reefs, rubble zones, and other soft-bottom habitats where gentle water movement delivers plankton and organic material. This natural behavior gives important insight into their aquarium care: they require soft substrate, room to expand, and regular feeding rather than strong lighting.
Care Requirements
Care Level: Moderate – Hardy when properly placed, but requires feeding and careful spacing
Minimum Tank Size: 20+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Requires a soft sand bed, open bottom placement, stable parameters, and space away from corals or other sessile invertebrates
Pink Tube Anemones should be placed in the sand bed where they can bury their tube and extend their tentacles without touching nearby corals. They do not attach to rock like true sea anemones and should not be forced into crevices or placed on hard surfaces without access to soft substrate. A deeper sand bed or protected sand-filled area is ideal, especially for larger specimens. Low to moderate indirect flow is best, as it helps deliver food without preventing the anemone from opening fully.
Diet & Nutrition
Pink Tube Anemones are carnivorous, non-photosynthetic feeders that rely on regular meaty foods.
Diet: Carnivorous – Prefers small meaty foods and planktonic foods
Recommended Foods:
Frozen mysis shrimp
Brine shrimp
Finely chopped seafood
Zooplankton-based foods
Small pieces of fish or shrimp
Prepared carnivore foods offered in appropriate portions
Pink Tube Anemones should be fed when fully expanded, especially after the lights dim or once the animal is comfortable opening during the day. Because they are not photosynthetic, lighting does not provide nutrition. Regular feeding is important for long-term health, but food pieces should be appropriately sized so they can be captured and consumed easily.
Lifespan & Growth Rate
Lifespan: 5+ years with proper care, with some tube anemones capable of living much longer in stable systems
Growth Rate: Moderate – Can develop a large tentacle spread over time
Pink Tube Anemones can become long-lived display animals when kept in mature aquariums with stable water quality, suitable substrate, and consistent feeding. Their tentacle crown may expand significantly, so they should be given enough open space from the beginning rather than placed tightly between corals.
Temperament & Compatibility
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive – Peaceful in movement, but capable of stinging nearby animals
Reef Safe? With caution – Does not roam like many anemones, but can sting corals, clams, fish, and invertebrates within reach
Pink Tube Anemones are best suited for aquariums where they can be given a dedicated sand-bed area away from corals and delicate tankmates. They do not host clownfish, and clownfish should not be expected to use them safely. Avoid placing them near coral colonies, clam mantles, slow bottom-dwelling fish, small gobies, ornamental shrimp, or other animals that may come into contact with their tentacles.
Common Challenges & Considerations
Requires Sand Placement: Pink Tube Anemones need soft substrate where they can bury and maintain their protective tube.
Not a Clownfish Host: They are not true hosting anemones and should not be purchased for clownfish pairing.
Strong Stinging Tentacles: Their tentacles can damage corals, clams, small fish, or invertebrates that touch them.
Needs Regular Feeding: They are non-photosynthetic and must receive meaty foods or planktonic foods.
May Retract When Stressed: Sudden movement, poor placement, or aggressive tankmates may cause them to stay closed.
Requires Space: Their tentacle spread can be much larger than expected, especially after dark.
Sensitive to Copper: Like most marine invertebrates, they should never be exposed to copper-based medications.
To prevent issues, place them in a mature aquarium with a soft sand bed, feed consistently, provide open space around the tentacle crown, and keep them away from corals or tankmates that may be stung.
