The Ornate Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon ornatus), also known as the False Leopard Wrasse, is a beautifully patterned saltwater fish prized for its intricate coloration and constantly active foraging behavior. Females and juveniles display an elaborate mix of reddish, dark, greenish-yellow, and blue-edged markings, while mature males develop their own distinctive coloration. Reaching approximately 5 inches as an adult, this species brings exceptional detail and movement to a well-established marine aquarium.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, New Guinea, and Western Australia, the Ornate Leopard Wrasse inhabits sheltered reefs and lagoons with areas of sand, coral, and rubble. In the aquarium it spends much of the day methodically searching rockwork and substrate for tiny crustaceans and other edible organisms before burying itself beneath the sand to sleep.
Although generally peaceful and highly desirable for a reef aquarium, this is a specialized marine aquarium fish best suited to experienced aquarists. Successful long-term care depends heavily on a mature aquarium, a healthy natural food population, a suitable sand bed, peaceful tankmates, and careful acclimation to prepared foods.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Expert Only
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific — Sri Lanka, Indonesia, New Guinea, and Western Australia
Scientific Name: Macropharyngodon ornatus
Tank Requirements
A mature, biologically established aquarium is strongly recommended for the Ornate Leopard Wrasse. Provide abundant live rock with plenty of surfaces for natural foraging along with open areas where the fish can swim and search for food throughout the day.
A fine, soft sand bed approximately 2 inches or deeper is an essential part of its habitat. Leopard wrasses naturally bury themselves in the substrate at night and may also dive into the sand when startled. Coarse or sharp substrate should be avoided because repeated burrowing can result in injury.
The aquarium should contain a healthy population of copepods and other small organisms living among the rockwork and substrate. Strong filtration and good water movement are beneficial, but the aquascape should also provide calmer sheltered areas.
A secure, tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended. Like many wrasses, this species can jump when frightened or disturbed.
Diet and Feeding
The Ornate Leopard Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally spends much of the day hunting small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates. An established reef aquarium with mature live rock and a healthy copepod population provides valuable supplemental nutrition and encourages natural feeding behavior.
Once acclimated to prepared foods, offer a varied diet including:
-
Vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp
-
Enriched brine shrimp
-
Copepods
-
Finely chopped marine seafood
-
Quality frozen carnivore blends
-
Small marine pellets or flakes when accepted
Several small feedings throughout the day are preferable to a single large feeding. Newly introduced specimens can be reluctant to accept prepared foods, and live copepods or live enriched brine shrimp may help stimulate an initial feeding response.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Ornate Leopard Wrasse is generally peaceful and does best with other non-aggressive marine fish. Avoid housing newly introduced specimens with highly territorial or excessively aggressive tankmates that may prevent them from feeding or settling into the aquarium.
This species may be maintained singly, and experienced aquarists may keep compatible groups when adequate aquarium space and resources are available. Leopard wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning females are capable of transitioning into males. Two established males should not be housed together, and caution is advisable when combining similar leopard wrasses.
Whenever possible, introduce this wrasse before particularly assertive tankmates so it has an opportunity to establish normal feeding and sleeping behavior without excessive competition.
Reef Compatibility
The Ornate Leopard Wrasse is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals or clams. Its peaceful disposition and constant movement through the rockwork make it especially attractive in established reef aquariums.
Because it naturally consumes very small crustaceans and other invertebrate life, populations of copepods and similar microfauna may be reduced through regular foraging. Very small mobile invertebrates could potentially be investigated as food, although established ornamental shrimp and other larger reef inhabitants are generally not its primary prey.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable, mature aquarium conditions are especially important for this species. Avoid sudden fluctuations in salinity, temperature, or other water parameters.
Common Considerations
-
Expert-level acclimation: Leopard wrasses can be sensitive during shipping and introduction and may initially refuse prepared foods.
-
Sand bed required: A fine, soft sand bed is essential for sleeping and natural refuge behavior.
-
Mature aquarium preferred: Established live rock and a dependable population of copepods and other microfauna significantly improve feeding opportunities.
-
Jumping risk: Keep the aquarium securely covered, especially during acclimation or when the fish is startled.
-
Peaceful tankmates: Aggressive or highly competitive fish can interfere with feeding and make successful acclimation considerably more difficult.
