FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Is a standard home aquarium large enough for an adult Naso Tang?
Usually not, since 180 gallons is the practical minimum for a fish approaching 18 inches. Tank length and open swimming room matter as much as nominal volume because this species is almost constantly in motion.
What should I verify before buying one?
Choose an active specimen that is not thin through the back and confirm that it is eating algae-based food such as nori before purchase. Some individuals are slow to accept captive foods, and a fish already weakened by poor feeding is hard to recover.
Can it live in a reef aquarium with other tangs and invertebrates?
It is reef safe and is not expected to target corals or common reef invertebrates, provided the system is spacious, securely aquascaped, and well filtered. It may quarrel with conspecifics or similarly shaped tangs, so those pairings call for substantial space and caution.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Naso Tang, Naso lituratus, is an impressive saltwater fish known for its streamlined body, bold facial markings, and brilliant orange caudal peduncle spines. Adults develop a brownish-gray to bluish-gray body with darker facial coloration, yellow and orange accents, and a contrasting blue tail. Mature males may develop long trailing filaments from the caudal fin, creating an especially dramatic appearance in a large marine aquarium.
Naturally associated with coral, rock, and rubble habitats on lagoon and seaward reefs, this species is an active swimmer that spends much of the day searching for leafy brown algae. Adults can reach approximately 18 inches, making the Naso Tang best suited to large reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums designed around substantial open swimming space. Its relatively manageable temperament, striking coloration, and reef-safe feeding behavior make it a desirable centerpiece surgeonfish for appropriately sized systems.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Herbivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Pacific Ocean and eastern Indo-Pacific, including Japan, Australia, Hawaii, French Polynesia, and surrounding islands
Scientific Name: Naso lituratus
Tank Requirements
The Naso Tang requires a large aquarium with extensive open swimming space. A 180-gallon or larger system is recommended to accommodate its substantial adult size and continuous cruising behavior.
Aquascaping should include sturdy live rock with caves and sheltered areas for resting while leaving long, unobstructed swimming lanes throughout the aquarium. This species benefits more from a long, spacious footprint than from densely packed rockwork.
Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. Mature Naso Tangs are large-bodied fish with substantial feeding requirements, so consistent maintenance and dependable nutrient export are important for maintaining water quality.
A secure aquarium cover is advisable, particularly during acclimation or when the fish is startled.
Diet and Feeding
The Naso Tang is primarily herbivorous and naturally feeds heavily on leafy brown macroalgae, including Sargassumand Dictyota. Captive nutrition should place a strong emphasis on marine algae.
Offer dried marine algae or nori daily, along with spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets, and frozen preparations formulated for marine grazers. Brown and red marine algae can be particularly useful for providing dietary variety.
Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other meaty foods may be accepted when feeding alongside tankmates, but these should supplement rather than replace an algae-rich diet. Multiple smaller feedings throughout the day are beneficial for maintaining good body condition in this active species.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Naso Tang is generally less aggressive than many highly territorial surgeonfish, but it should still be considered semi-aggressive. Most aggression is directed toward other tangs, particularly other members of the genus Naso or fish competing for similar swimming and feeding territory.
It can be kept with a broad range of appropriately sized marine fish, including angelfish, rabbitfish, wrasses, clownfish, anthias, and other community species. Very timid fish may be intimidated by the size and constant activity of a mature specimen.
Keeping multiple large tangs requires substantially more aquarium space, abundant feeding opportunities, and carefully planned introductions. Multiple Naso Tangs are generally best reserved for exceptionally large systems.
Reef Compatibility
The Naso Tang is considered reef safe and is an excellent choice for sufficiently large reef aquariums. Its natural feeding behavior is directed primarily toward algae rather than healthy coral tissue.
It does not normally prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, or other common reef invertebrates. Although it may graze extensively around coral bases and rockwork, this activity is typically directed toward algae growing on hard surfaces.
A consistent supply of marine algae should still be provided even when natural algae are available in the aquarium.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable conditions are more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to achieve an exact number. Maintain consistent salinity and temperature along with strong oxygenation, efficient filtration, and regular aquarium maintenance.
Common Considerations
-
Large adult size: The Naso Tang can reach approximately 18 inches and requires substantial long-term swimming space.
-
Active open-water swimmer: Maintain long, unobstructed swimming lanes rather than filling the aquarium completely with rockwork.
-
Algae-focused diet: Regular marine algae feedings are essential, with leafy brown algae being especially appropriate for this species.
-
Tang compatibility: Generally manageable with unrelated fish but potentially territorial toward other tangs and especially other Naso species.
-
Sharp caudal plates: The bright orange defensive structures at the base of the tail can cause injury, so care should be taken during capture, transfer, and aquarium maintenance.
