FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What aquarium size and layout does a Magnificent Foxface need?

Plan on a mature marine aquarium of at least 125 gallons for an adult. Combine extensive live rock for grazing and shelter with a long, open swimming lane.

Is the Magnificent Foxface completely reef-safe?

No, it is reef-safe with caution. Underfed individuals may nip soft corals, fleshy LPS polyps, or other coral tissue, and they may also pick at tunicates and sponges.

What should a Magnificent Foxface be fed?

Offer a varied, algae-rich diet built on dried nori, Spirulina preparations, algae-based flakes, and other vegetable matter. Its natural diet also includes small benthic invertebrates, which supports an omnivorous classification with strong herbivorous leanings.

The Magnificent Foxface is an exceptional saltwater fish recognized by its bold black facial mask, pearly white chest, dark charcoal saddle, and bright yellow-to-orange fins. Red-orange accents along the dorsal spines add further contrast, giving this rabbitfish a refined appearance that stands apart from more commonly available foxface species.

Native to the eastern Indian Ocean, Siganus magnificus occurs from Thailand and the Similan Islands south to Java, Indonesia. It inhabits coral reefs at depths of approximately 2–30 meters, where adults are usually seen alone or in pairs and juveniles remain close to protective coral structure. The species reaches about 24 cm in standard length, placing it near 10 inches at full size.

Its striking coloration, active grazing behavior, and generally peaceful temperament make the Magnificent Foxface desirable for large reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums. It is an adaptable feeder that consumes algae and small invertebrates, although its venomous fin spines and occasional interest in fleshy corals require appropriate care and handling.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Herbivore / Omnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Eastern Indian Ocean—Thailand and the Similan Islands to Java, Indonesia
Scientific Name: Siganus magnificus

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with a long swimming footprint, abundant live rock, and broad open areas through the center and front of the display. Arrange the rockwork into caves, overhangs, and sheltered passages while leaving plenty of exposed surfaces for natural grazing.

Moderate to strong, well-distributed water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. This active rabbitfish produces substantial waste when fed properly, so dependable biological filtration and regular maintenance are important. A specialized substrate is not required; reef sand or fine gravel is suitable.

Provide a secure retreat large enough to accommodate the fish at its adult size. Rabbitfish may become pale, dark, or mottled when resting or frightened, and newly introduced specimens often remain close to shelter until comfortable.

Use a fitted lid or secure aquarium cover. Exercise extreme care during maintenance, capture, and transfer because the fin spines are venomous and can deliver a painful injury. A rigid specimen container is generally safer than a fine-mesh net, which can become caught on the spines.

Diet and Feeding

The Magnificent Foxface feeds naturally on algae and small invertebrates. In captivity, vegetable-based marine foods should form the foundation of its diet, supported by moderate amounts of appropriately sized animal protein.

Offer nori or other marine algae sheets daily, along with spirulina flakes, herbivore pellets, frozen algae blends, and foods formulated for rabbitfish or surgeonfish. Natural algae growing on mature live rock provides valuable additional grazing opportunities.

Supplement with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped clam, krill, and quality frozen omnivore blends. Feed two to three small meals daily and provide regular access to algae sheets. Multiple feeding clips can reduce competition when the fish is housed with tangs or other large herbivores.

Adequate feeding supports body condition and may reduce unwanted interest in corals, but it cannot guarantee completely reef-safe behavior.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Magnificent Foxface is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and is usually confident enough to coexist with moderately assertive community species. Suitable tankmates include tangs, angelfish, butterflyfish, larger wrasses, clownfish, rabbitfish of different shapes, and other non-predatory fish that will not prevent it from feeding.

Adults naturally occur alone or in pairs, but two unrelated aquarium specimens may not form a compatible pair. Keep one specimen in most home aquariums unless a proven pair is available and the system provides substantially more room.

Use caution with other rabbitfish and foxfaces, especially similarly shaped species. Territorial behavior can develop once an individual becomes established. Introduce timid fish before the foxface whenever possible and provide visual barriers to reduce prolonged chasing.

Its venomous spines provide an effective defense, but they do not make the fish suitable for housing with highly aggressive predators. Persistent harassment can still cause stress, hiding, and poor feeding.

Reef Compatibility

The Magnificent Foxface is reef safe with caution. Most individuals focus their grazing on algae growing across rockwork and aquarium surfaces and do not actively hunt ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, or other mobile invertebrates.

However, an underfed or particularly curious specimen may nip fleshy large-polyp stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, sponges, or other sessile animals. Decorative macroalgae may also be consumed. Individual behavior varies, and generous feeding does not completely eliminate the risk.

Monitor the fish carefully after introduction and after any major change in feeding routine. Aquarists maintaining valuable fleshy corals should have a practical removal plan available.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain consistent salinity, excellent oxygenation, and low levels of accumulated organic waste. Long-term stability is more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to achieve one exact reading.

Common Considerations

  • Venomous fin spines: Avoid direct handling and use extreme care during capture, transfer, or aquarium maintenance.

  • Requires substantial swimming room: Adults approach 10 inches and need a long, open aquarium rather than densely packed rockwork.

  • Reef safe with caution: Fleshy corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and decorative macroalgae may be nipped.

  • Provide algae-rich foods daily: Natural aquarium growth alone may not support a mature specimen.

  • Use caution with other rabbitfish: Conspecifics and similarly shaped foxfaces may trigger territorial behavior.
