FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How large an aquarium does an adult Red Louti Grouper need?
Plan on a minimum of 180 gallons for an adult, with more volume preferred given its 16-inch adult size and heavy feeding. Secure all rockwork to the substrate, since this grouper digs and can topple loose structures.
Can a Red Louti Grouper be kept in a reef tank?
It does not harm corals or other sessile invertebrates, so it can live among established coral colonies. However, it will eat shrimp, crabs, and any fish small enough to swallow, so most aquarists choose a large fish-only-with-live-rock system.
What are suitable tankmates for a Red Louti Grouper?
Only similarly large, aggressive fish that can hold their own belong in the same system. Add the grouper last so existing residents have already established territories.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Louti (Skunk) Grouper is a dramatic juvenile form of Variola louti, recognized for the bold contrasting coloration that gives it its “Skunk” trade name. Young specimens typically display a pale white to cream underside contrasted by darker black, reddish, or orange coloration across the upper body, along with scattered pale blue spotting. As the fish matures, this striking juvenile pattern gradually transitions into the deep red to maroon coloration, dense blue spotting, yellow fin margins, and elongated lyre-shaped tail characteristic of adult Louti Groupers.
Variola louti, also known as the Yellow-Edged Lyretail Grouper, occurs throughout the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward into the central Pacific. It inhabits clear outer reef slopes and offshore reef environments, where it actively hunts smaller fish and crustaceans. Although Skunk Louti Groupers are often offered at a relatively small juvenile size, adults can exceed 30 inches and require exceptionally spacious long-term housing.
This is a powerful predatory saltwater fish best suited to large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquariums. Its unusual juvenile pattern makes it particularly attractive when young, but aquarists should plan from the beginning for the very large, active grouper it will become.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons
Temperament: Aggressive / Predatory
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and central Pacific
Scientific Name: Variola louti
Tank Requirements
Provide a very large marine aquarium with extensive horizontal swimming room and sturdy reef-style rockwork. Although juveniles may spend considerable time close to caves and shelter, adults become large, active predators that require substantial unobstructed swimming space.
Arrange rockwork around the sides and rear of the aquarium to create caves, ledges, and shaded retreat areas while preserving broad swimming lanes. All structures should be securely positioned because a mature grouper is capable of disturbing loosely stacked rock.
Strong biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, good circulation, and excellent oxygenation are essential. As the fish grows, its food intake and waste production increase considerably, so filtration should be designed around the eventual adult rather than the juvenile being purchased.
Diet and Feeding
The Louti Grouper is a carnivore that naturally feeds primarily on fish, supplemented by shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans.
Juveniles can be offered appropriately sized mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, and quality frozen marine carnivore blends. As the fish grows, transition to larger pieces of shrimp, squid, scallop, clam, and marine fish flesh.
Young specimens can be fed smaller meals more frequently, while larger established adults generally require substantial meals several times per week. Adjust portions according to body condition and avoid chronic overfeeding.
Freshwater feeder fish should not be used as a staple diet. A varied selection of marine-based foods provides more appropriate long-term nutrition.
Temperament and Tankmates
Even when small, the Skunk Louti Grouper should be considered a developing predatory fish. Its mouth and feeding capabilities increase dramatically as it grows, and fish that appear safe companions when the grouper is juvenile may eventually become prey.
Tankmates should be selected according to the grouper’s adult size. Large triggerfish, substantial tangs, angelfish, large wrasses, puffers, and other robust marine predators may be suitable in adequately sized systems.
Avoid small fish, shrimp, crabs, and other animals that can be swallowed. Caution is also recommended with other large groupers because mature specimens can become territorial.
Reef Compatibility
The Louti (Skunk) Grouper is not considered reef safe.
It does not typically feed directly on coral tissue, but smaller reef fish, ornamental shrimp, crabs, and other appropriately sized animals are potential prey. This risk becomes increasingly significant as the grouper matures.
Large adults can also disturb unsecured rockwork and delicate coral colonies through normal swimming and territorial behavior. A spacious fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium is the most appropriate long-term environment.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable salinity, strong oxygenation, and consistently high water quality. Powerful filtration and regular maintenance become increasingly important as the fish grows and its bioload increases.
Common Considerations
- Dramatic juvenile transformation: The contrasting “skunk” pattern changes significantly as the fish matures into the red, blue-spotted adult form.
- Very large adult size: Adults can exceed 30 inches, so long-term housing must be planned accordingly.
- Highly predatory: Smaller fish, shrimp, crabs, and other potential prey may be swallowed.
- Heavy adult bioload: Strong filtration and efficient protein skimming are essential for mature specimens.
- Choose tankmates for the adult fish: Compatibility should be based on the grouper’s eventual size and predatory ability rather than its juvenile size.
