FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Do I need a pistol shrimp to keep an Aurora Goby?
A pistol shrimp is not strictly required, but it is strongly recommended. Paired with an Alpheus shrimp, the goby forms its natural burrow-sharing partnership and behaves far more confidently.
Is the Aurora Goby safe with corals and clams?
Yes. It is reef safe and will not harm corals, clams, or other sessile invertebrates, nor does it bother ornamental shrimp, crabs, or snails.
Can I keep more than one Aurora Goby together?
Only as a confirmed mated pair. Unpaired individuals and other shrimp goby species will fight over territory, so a single specimen per tank is the safer approach.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Flagtail Pinkbar Goby, also known as the Aurora Goby (Amblyeleotris aurora), is a beautifully patterned bottom-dwelling saltwater fish featuring a pale body crossed by broad warm brown to reddish bands. Its standout feature is the colorful yellow tail decorated with vivid red markings, creating the distinctive “rising sun” appearance associated with this species.
Native to the Western Indian Ocean, the Aurora Goby inhabits clear coastal and outer reef environments where sand and rubble provide suitable burrowing habitat. In nature, it forms a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, most notably Randall’s Pistol Shrimp, sharing a burrow while the goby remains positioned near the entrance as an alert lookout.
Its manageable adult size, peaceful disposition, attractive coloration, and fascinating shrimp-goby partnership make it an excellent marine aquarium fish for established reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only aquariums. When comfortable, it often remains visible near its burrow, providing an interesting combination of color and natural behavior.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea
Scientific Name: Amblyeleotris aurora
Tank Requirements
Provide a stable saltwater aquarium with a sandy substrate, secure rockwork, and open areas along the bottom where the goby can establish a burrow. Fine to moderately coarse marine sand combined with small pieces of rubble closely matches its natural habitat and is particularly appropriate when keeping it with a pistol shrimp.
Rock structures should be securely positioned before the goby or shrimp begins excavating. Avoid balancing heavy rockwork directly on loose sand, since repeated digging around the base can create instability.
Moderate water movement is suitable, but intense flow directed at the burrow entrance should be avoided. Leave open sand near rock bases to encourage natural burrowing and perching behavior. A tight-fitting lid or mesh aquarium cover is strongly recommended because shrimp gobies may jump when startled or during acclimation.
Diet and Feeding
The Aurora Goby is carnivorous and naturally feeds on small crustaceans and other marine organisms associated with sandy reef environments.
In captivity, offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen carnivore blends, and appropriately sized sinking marine pellets. A varied diet helps maintain good body condition and coloration.
Feed once or twice daily, making sure food reaches the lower portion of the aquarium near the goby’s territory. In tanks with fast-feeding fish, targeted feeding near the burrow can help ensure the goby receives an adequate amount of food.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Flagtail Shrimp Goby is generally peaceful and works well with other non-aggressive community marine fish. It normally stays close to its burrow and has little interest in fish occupying the middle and upper portions of the aquarium.
Some territorial behavior may occur toward other shrimp gobies, closely related species, or bottom-dwelling fish competing for the same shelter. Keeping a single specimen is the simplest approach for most aquariums, although compatible established pairs may also be maintained.
This species naturally associates with pistol shrimp and is particularly known for partnering with Randall’s Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli). When paired successfully, the shrimp maintains and excavates the shared burrow while the goby watches for potential threats.
Avoid large predatory fish and highly aggressive tankmates that could intimidate, injure, or consume the goby.
Reef Compatibility
Reef Safe: Yes.
The Aurora Goby is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, snails, or other ornamental reef invertebrates. Its peaceful behavior and preference for remaining near the substrate make it well suited to mixed reef aquariums.
The primary consideration is burrowing activity. The goby, and especially a partnered pistol shrimp, may move significant amounts of sand and small rubble around the burrow. Secure rockwork carefully and avoid placing delicate or easily buried corals directly beside the burrow entrance.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, consistent water quality rather than continually adjusting the aquarium to reach a single exact number. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or other major water parameters.
Common Considerations
-
Provide a secure aquarium lid, as shrimp gobies may jump when startled or newly introduced.
-
A sand and rubble substrate encourages natural burrowing behavior.
-
Secure rockwork before introduction so excavation cannot undermine the aquascape.
-
Territorial behavior may occur with other shrimp gobies or similar bottom-dwelling species.
-
Pairing with a compatible Randall’s Pistol Shrimp can encourage the species’ natural symbiotic behavior, although a shrimp is not required for successful long-term care.
