FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How big of a tank does a Blonde Naso Tang need?

Plan on a minimum of 180 gallons for an adult, ideally with a footprint of five feet or longer. This species is an active swimmer that needs long, open lanes.

Is the Blonde Naso Tang reef safe?

Yes. It does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates, and its algae grazing can help control nuisance growth in a reef system.

Will a Blonde Naso Tang fight with other tangs?

It tolerates most community fish but often turns territorial toward tangs of similar shape, size, or color, especially other Naso. Keep one unless the tank is very large and all surgeonfish go in together.

The Blonde Naso Tang (Naso elegans), also known as the Elegant Unicornfish or Orange-Spine Unicornfish, is a spectacular large-bodied surgeonfish recognized for its bold yellow dorsal fin, dark bluish-gray body, black facial mask, yellow lips, and bright orange caudal peduncle spines. Mature males may also develop long trailing filaments from the corners of the tail, giving fully grown specimens an especially impressive appearance.

Native to the Indian Ocean, this species ranges from the Red Sea and eastern coast of Africa through the islands of the western Indian Ocean to southwestern Indonesia. It inhabits reef flats and rocky reef environments, where individuals and groups spend much of their time swimming in open water and grazing on benthic algae.

Reaching approximately 18 inches as an adult, the Blonde Naso Tang is best suited to a large, mature reef aquarium or fish-only aquarium with extensive open swimming space. It is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish but can show aggression toward other tangs, particularly those competing for similar territory or food. Its striking appearance, active swimming behavior, and reef-safe nature make it an exceptional centerpiece for appropriately sized marine systems.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Herbivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indian Ocean — Red Sea and East Africa to southwestern Indonesia
Scientific Name: Naso elegans

Tank Requirements

A 180-gallon or larger aquarium is required to provide the long-term swimming room needed by this large, active surgeonfish. Tank dimensions are particularly important, as the Blonde Naso Tang spends considerable time cruising through open water and benefits greatly from a long aquarium footprint.

Arrange live rock to provide caves, overhangs, and grazing surfaces while leaving substantial unobstructed swimming space across the front and upper portions of the aquarium. Avoid creating an overly dense aquascape that limits movement once the fish reaches adult size.

Moderate to strong water movement and good oxygenation are appropriate for this active reef species. Strong filtration and consistent water quality are also important because large tangs consume substantial amounts of food and can contribute significantly to the aquarium's biological load.

A secure lid is recommended. Long-term housing should be planned around the species' adult size rather than the considerably smaller size at which Blonde Naso Tangs are commonly offered.

Diet and Feeding

The Blonde Naso Tang is primarily herbivorous and naturally feeds extensively on benthic algae. A marine algae-rich diet should form the foundation of its captive nutrition.

Offer dried nori or other marine algae regularly using a feeding clip, ideally making grazing material available frequently throughout the week. Supplement this with quality herbivore pellets, spirulina-based foods, frozen herbivore blends, and other preparations formulated for marine grazing fish.

Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other meaty foods can be offered as part of a varied diet, but they should not replace marine algae as the primary nutritional component.

Feed multiple small portions throughout the day when practical. Regular access to marine vegetable matter encourages natural grazing behavior and helps maintain healthy body condition.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Blonde Naso Tang is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and can be maintained successfully with many large community species. Suitable tankmates include angelfish, clownfish, wrasses, rabbitfish, anthias, larger gobies, and other appropriately sized reef fish.

Territorial behavior is more likely toward other surgeonfish, particularly other Naso species or tangs competing for similar swimming space and food. Housing multiple large tangs requires substantially more room than the minimum aquarium size and careful planning of introductions.

Introducing tangs simultaneously can sometimes reduce territorial disputes, although individual behavior varies. Plenty of open swimming space, separate retreat areas, and multiple feeding locations are beneficial when several surgeonfish share an aquarium.

Avoid housing this active species with extremely aggressive fish that may continually harass it or prevent normal feeding.

Reef Compatibility

The Blonde Naso Tang is considered reef safe and does not normally consume healthy SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, clams, or ornamental invertebrates.

Its grazing behavior is generally directed toward algae growing on rock and other aquarium surfaces. This can make it particularly useful in large reef systems where natural grazing is desirable.

As with any large fish, loosely secured coral frags should be positioned carefully because an adult tang can accidentally dislodge small pieces while swimming or grazing around the rockwork.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable, well-oxygenated seawater is especially important for large active surgeonfish. Maintain consistent temperature and salinity and avoid sudden changes in major water parameters.

Common Considerations

  • Adults can reach approximately 18 inches and require a minimum 180-gallon aquarium with substantial open swimming space.

  • Marine algae and seaweed should make up a significant portion of the diet rather than relying primarily on meaty foods.

  • The species is generally peaceful with unrelated fish but may become territorial toward other tangs or closely related surgeonfish.

  • Strong filtration and good oxygenation are important because of the fish's large adult size, active metabolism, and feeding requirements.

  • Sharp orange caudal peduncle spines are used defensively, so use care when handling, netting, or transporting the fish.
