Description

Coralline Algae is one of the most sought-after beneficial algae in marine aquariums and is widely recognized as a sign of a mature, stable reef system. These beautiful purple, pink, red, and occasionally green calcified algae naturally encrust rocks, overflows, pumps, and aquarium walls, creating the vibrant appearance of a thriving natural reef.

Beyond its striking coloration, coralline algae plays an important role in the health of your aquarium. As it grows, it occupies available surfaces, helping to outcompete nuisance algae for space and reducing the likelihood of unwanted algae taking hold. Its hard, calcium-based skeleton also helps stabilize live rock by binding surfaces together and creating a natural foundation for beneficial bacteria.

Coralline algae serves as an excellent indicator that your aquarium has stable water chemistry suitable for calcifying organisms. Healthy growth typically suggests that calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels are being maintained properly—conditions that also promote the growth of stony corals, coralline algae, clams, and other reef-building organisms.

Our cultured coralline algae is an excellent way to seed a new aquarium or accelerate coralline growth in an established reef. Once introduced, spores can spread naturally throughout the aquarium, gradually covering rockwork and equipment with vibrant encrusting growth.

Benefits

  • Seeds your aquarium with multiple strains of beneficial coralline algae
  • Helps naturally outcompete nuisance algae by occupying available surfaces
  • Creates the beautiful purple, pink, and red coloration found on mature reef rock
  • Indicates stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels
  • Provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria
  • Encourages the development of a healthy, mature reef ecosystem
  • Supports the natural appearance of reef aquariums

For best results, maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400–450 ppm, alkalinity between 8–9 dKH, magnesium between 1300–1450 ppm, and avoid allowing nuisance algae to overtake new growth. With proper care and patience, coralline algae will gradually spread throughout your aquarium, creating the natural reef appearance every hobbyist strives for.
