Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Two Spot (Candy) Hogfish ( Bodianus bimaculatus ) is a compact, colorful wrasse with yellow, orange, and pink tones that vary with maturity. Its two characteristic dark spots occur on the gill cover and near the base of the tail. Its small size and active foraging make it an engaging addition to a carefully stocked marine aquarium.

Found across Indo-Pacific reefs, it hunts small invertebrates along rubble zones and rocky slopes. In an established aquarium, it remains active, weaving through rockwork and crossing open water as it searches for food. It stays reasonably small and is generally less aggressive than larger relatives.

This species is best appreciated in a display that allows its natural foraging behavior without exposing vulnerable livestock to unnecessary risk. Sheltered resting places, suitable companions, and a varied diet matter as much as the appearance of the aquascape.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 60 Gallons
Adult Size: Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Bodianus bimaculatus

Tank Requirements

Provide at least 60 gallons for long-term adult housing. Adult size: Up to 4 inches (10 cm). Choose a long, adequately wide aquarium with room for the fish to turn, pass other fish, and travel around the aquascape without repeatedly squeezing through narrow gaps.

Arrange secure rock formations into caves, overhangs, and sheltered passages. Several separate retreats are preferable to one central cave that becomes the focus of competition. Keep an open route along the front or around the rockwork for normal swimming.

Use separated rock structures to interrupt direct sightlines. A fish should be able to retreat out of view without being cornered at the end of a narrow passage. Leave enough access to inspect shelters and remove leftover food.

Provide sand or rubble areas for foraging and stable rock crevices for nighttime shelter. Support heavy structures securely before adding loose substrate so that normal digging or searching cannot undermine them.

A tight-fitting lid is essential. Close gaps around plumbing and overflows. Hogfish can make sudden jumps when startled or during social disputes, so a partially covered aquarium is not sufficient.

Maintain effective biological and mechanical filtration, good oxygenation, and regular nutrient export. Distribute circulation around the aquascape while retaining protected areas where the fish can rest.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, it eats small crustaceans, worms, and other benthic invertebrates found among rock and rubble. Offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and marine flakes, with chopped seafood, krill, clam, or squid as occasional additions.

Build the menu around varied marine animal foods, using pieces appropriate to the size of the fish. Suitable options include:

  • Mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp

  • Chopped marine shrimp

  • Clam or mussel meat

  • Appropriately sized pieces of squid

  • Quality frozen marine carnivore preparations

  • Suitable marine pellets when accepted

Offer small meals once or twice daily, with an additional small feeding when needed for a young or newly settled fish. Check body condition and actual food intake before increasing portions.

Observe meals from start to finish. Place food in more than one area if a confident fish monopolizes feeding, and use targeted delivery near shelter for a newcomer that is reluctant to venture into open water.

Introduce prepared foods gradually while maintaining foods the fish reliably accepts. Avoid depending on one frozen item, and remove leftovers before they break down in the aquarium. A mature display provides foraging opportunities but does not replace regular feeding.

Temperament and Tankmates

This smaller hogfish is generally peaceful toward dissimilar community fish, although it may defend shelter against other hogfish or similarly shaped wrasses. Its relatively mild temperament does not remove its natural interest in small invertebrate prey.

Choose peaceful to moderately active companions that will not drive it away from food or shelter. Avoid pairing it with large, aggressive predators simply because all of the fish are marine species.

Keep one specimen in a typical home aquarium. Adding another hogfish or a similar-looking wrasse can create persistent competition for the same feeding routes and resting places.

Allow a newcomer access to sheltered feeding areas and watch whether established fish intercept its food. A fish that remains hidden throughout every meal needs closer observation, not simply a larger amount of food scattered into the tank.

Watch for repeated chasing, damaged fins, missed meals, or a fish restricted to one corner. Rearranging sightlines can help with mild disputes, but persistent aggression requires separation rather than waiting for injuries.

Reef Compatibility

Reef safe with caution. Its interest in mobile invertebrates must be considered separately from whether it normally eats coral tissue.

Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, hermit crabs, snails, and other vulnerable bottom-dwelling animals may be hunted. An established cleanup crew is not protected simply because it was present before the fish was introduced.

Corals are not its principal food, but the fish may disturb loose fragments while foraging or passing through the aquascape. Secure colonies and leave clear swimming routes. The caution rating is not a promise that every sessile invertebrate will be ignored.

Regular feeding does not eliminate predation. Make the stocking decision around the animals you need to protect, and arrange an alternative home before introducing the hogfish if its behavior would put valued livestock at risk.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain an established biological filter and good oxygenation. Ammonia and nitrite should remain undetectable, and routine testing should guide water changes and nutrient export rather than waiting for visible deterioration.

Check salinity with a calibrated instrument and replace evaporated water with freshwater. Match replacement saltwater to the aquarium during water changes, and avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH.

Keep feeding and maintenance consistent. Changes in appetite, breathing, or normal activity warrant investigation even when the water looks clear.

Common Considerations

  • Adult Housing: Plan around up to 4 inches (10 cm) and a minimum aquarium of 60 gallons; footprint and available swimming space remain essential.

  • Secure Cover: Cover plumbing gaps and overflows as well as the main opening.

  • Invertebrate Risk: Small shrimp, crabs, hermits, and snails may be treated as prey even by a well-fed fish.

  • Social Behavior: Keep one in a typical aquarium and monitor access to food and shelter as it matures.

  • Feeding Observation: Confirm that the hogfish and its companions actually receive appropriate portions.

  • Quarantine: Observe a new fish separately before introduction, establish reliable feeding, and address signs of illness promptly.
