The Female Swallowtail Angelfish (Genicanthus melanospilos), also known as the Spotbreast, Blackspot, or Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish, is an elegant marine aquarium fish prized for its graceful swimming style and exceptional reef compatibility. Females display a beautiful two-tone pattern, with warm yellow across the back and upper body fading into pale blue-gray to silvery coloration below. The deeply forked tail is accented by broad black margins along its upper and lower lobes, creating the distinctive swallowtail appearance. Adults reach approximately 7 inches in total length.

Native primarily to the western Pacific, G. melanospilos ranges from Indonesia to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to New Caledonia, with populations extending into the eastern Indian Ocean around areas such as the Rowley Shoals. In nature, these angelfish inhabit deeper outer reef slopes and drop-offs, often swimming above coral-rich habitat where they capture zooplankton from the water column.

Unlike most large marine angelfish, members of the genus Genicanthus are primarily planktivorous rather than sponge and coral grazers. This makes the Female Swallowtail Angelfish one of the best angelfish choices for a reef aquarium. Its comparatively peaceful temperament, active open-water behavior, and striking coloration also make it an excellent centerpiece for a large peaceful fish-only aquarium.

The species reaches approximately 18 cm, or about 7 inches, and its active midwater swimming behavior makes a 125-gallon or larger aquarium appropriate for long-term housing.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with generous open swimming space along with substantial rockwork arranged into caves, overhangs, and sheltered retreat areas. Unlike many angelfish that spend much of their time closely grazing reef surfaces, Swallowtail Angelfish regularly swim in the water column and benefit considerably from an aquarium with a long, unobstructed swimming area.

Rockwork should still provide several secure caves and shaded areas where the fish can retreat, particularly during acclimation. In nature, the species occurs along steep outer reef slopes, drop-offs, caves, and boulder bases at depths generally around 20–45 meters.

Moderate to strong water movement, good oxygenation, and efficient filtration are appropriate. No specialized substrate is required, so sand or a conventional reef substrate works well. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended for active open-water marine fish.

Diet and Feeding

The Female Swallowtail Angelfish is primarily a planktivore, naturally feeding on zooplankton suspended above the reef. This feeding strategy is one of the major reasons Genicanthus angelfish are considerably safer around corals than most other marine angelfish.

Offer a varied diet of finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, small krill, finely chopped marine seafood, and high-quality frozen plankton or omnivore blends. Quality marine pellets, flakes, Spirulina, and other algae-containing foods can be included for additional nutritional variety.

Because this species naturally captures small food items throughout the day, two to three smaller feedings daily are preferable when practical. Food should be distributed into the water column where the fish can feed naturally rather than relying entirely on foods that immediately sink to the bottom.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Female Swallowtail Angelfish is generally peaceful and considerably less territorial than many other full-size marine angelfish. It works well with a broad range of peaceful to moderately assertive reef fish, including tangs, wrasses, anthias, clownfish, cardinalfish, gobies, and other appropriately sized community species.

This species naturally occurs in pairs and loose social groups, often consisting of several females associated with a dominant male. In sufficiently large aquariums, compatible pairs or harems can be maintained, with simultaneous introductions helping reduce territorial disputes.

Like other Genicanthus, the species is a protogynous hermaphrodite: females are capable of transitioning into males when social conditions favor the change. This is worth considering when maintaining groups over the long term.

Avoid excessively aggressive tankmates that may repeatedly chase the angelfish or prevent it from reaching food.

Reef Compatibility

The Female Swallowtail Angelfish is reef safe and is one of the most dependable marine angelfish for coral aquariums. Its natural diet focuses primarily on zooplankton in the water column rather than grazing sponges, tunicates, corals, or other sessile reef organisms.
