The Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket Filefish (Brachaluteres jacksonianus), also called the Pygmy Leatherjacket, is a small Australian filefish with a nearly round, laterally compressed body. Its color can range from yellow-brown to olive green, often with dark stripes or fine spots that help it blend into cover. It has a single smooth first dorsal spine and can inflate its abdomen. The rounded outline and a habit of hovering beside vegetation make it easy to overlook when it is settled.
This species is native to temperate Australian waters, from southern Queensland around the southern coast to Western Australia, including Tasmania. It occurs in sheltered bays, estuaries, and coastal reefs, often around seagrass, macroalgae, or the structure beneath piers and jetties. Individuals have been observed holding onto algal fronds or sponges while resting. In an aquarium, give the fish a sheltered place to rest and room to move between cover and feeding areas.
The Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket is a measured swimmer that benefits from calm tankmates and fine foods delivered within reach. Keep it in an established marine system with stable temperature control. Its compact size makes it suitable for a modest aquarium, provided the adult can find cover, maneuver around the rockwork, and feed without competing with much faster fish.
Quick Care Guide

Adult Size: Up to 3.9 inches (10 cm total length)
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Temperate southern Australia, including Tasmania

Tank Requirements
Provide at least 30 gallons for one adult, including when starting with a small specimen. Adults can reach about 3.9 inches (10 cm) in total length. Choose a footprint that leaves clear space along the rocks and enough room to turn between shelters. Allow more volume and separate feeding areas if keeping other fish that use the same part of the aquarium.
Use stable rockwork with shaded recesses and a few upright structures where the fish can hover. Established marine macroalgae can add shelter and surfaces to inspect in a suitable system. Leave some open water directly in front of cover so the fish can reach food without crossing the busiest part of the display.
Provide a quiet feeding lane. Use broad, gentle flow around the main shelter and maintain good circulation and surface movement elsewhere. Adjust pump direction if the fish has to swim continuously just to stay in place. Test the route of small foods so they remain within reach before being drawn into the overflow.
Use 64–72°F (18–22°C) as a practical long-term temperature target. Check the warmest part of the day before introduction, including heat from lighting and pumps, and use a chiller where needed. Choose tankmates and invertebrates that can be kept at the same stable temperature.
Fit a secure lid and protect accessible pump intakes. Keep the main shelters visible enough to check the fish’s condition, and leave space to siphon food beneath ledges. A newly introduced fish may choose a different resting place than expected. Move the feeding position to where it settles.
Diet and Feeding
Offer a varied omnivore diet with small marine animal foods and algae-based preparations. The Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket has a small mouth and can take fine frozen foods and appropriately sized prepared foods. Cut seafood into pieces it can swallow comfortably and rotate several foods rather than relying on one ingredient.
Rotate foods from these options.
- Small frozen mysis shrimp
- Enriched brine shrimp
- Finely chopped marine shrimp or clam
- Balanced frozen marine omnivore preparations
- Fine marine pellets or flakes once accepted
- Finely sized marine algae or spirulina-based foods
Start with two small meals daily. Offer the first few pieces near the fish’s shelter and watch for swallowing. In a mixed aquarium, feed faster fish separately so the filefish can make several short feeding trips without having to cross the main current.
Observe feeding during acclimation. The fish may investigate food before taking a bite or may feed only close to cover. Try finer pieces, a gentler delivery position, or enriched live prey if it is reluctant to eat. Once it is feeding consistently, add balanced prepared foods to the rotation.
Track appetite and body condition over several meals. If food is repeatedly spat out or another fish intercepts it, adjust particle size or placement before increasing the total portion. Remove unused seafood and algae so they do not accumulate in sheltered areas.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish. Choose calm, appropriately sized companions that use other parts of the aquarium or feed at a similar pace. Persistent fin nippers, territorial fish, and large predators are poor matches for a small filefish that spends much of its time near cover.
One filefish is the simplest arrangement for a typical display. If keeping compatible individuals together, provide extra room and several feeding positions. Watch how each fish uses shelter after introduction and at meals, since competition can occur without obvious injuries.
A fish that misses several meals, retreats whenever a tankmate approaches, or develops damaged fins needs closer observation. Add a separate feeding position and a second route into cover. Separate incompatible fish if the filefish still cannot feed and rest comfortably.
Reef Compatibility
The Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket is Reef Safe Caution. Filefish browse surfaces and may investigate exposed ornamental invertebrates. Observe coral polyps, sponges, and other sessile animals near its favored cover for repeated picking. Its behavior can vary by individual.
Stock for the cooler temperature range as well as the fish’s browsing behavior. A temperate fish-only aquarium with live rock is the more predictable setup when ornamental invertebrates are a priority. A varied prepared diet supports good condition, and the fish may continue to pick at surfaces between meals.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 64–72°F (18–22°C)
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain a fully cycled, well-oxygenated marine aquarium with undetectable ammonia and nitrite. Replace evaporated water with fresh water and match replacement saltwater to the aquarium during water changes. Check the temperature controller and verify that flow reaches sheltered areas after equipment service.
Track nutrient levels as feeding increases. Siphon scraps from accessible areas and clean mechanical filtration regularly. Learn the fish’s normal resting and feeding patterns so that a change in appetite, breathing, or use of cover is easier to spot.
Common Considerations
- Adult Housing: Provide at least 30 gallons for a fish up to 3.9 inches (10 cm), with shaded cover and open space to turn.
- Cool-Water Target: Keep temperature steady around 64–72°F (18–22°C) and choose livestock with compatible requirements.
- Feeding Access: Offer fine marine animal foods and algae-based preparations where the fish can take them without competition.
- Resting Behavior: This species may grip a frond or other structure with its mouth when resting.
- Reef Caution: Watch for browsing on exposed ornamental invertebrates and favor a temperate fish-only system when those animals are a priority.
- Handling: Use a suitable rigid container where practical. Give the fish time to release its grip on shelter or transfer equipment.
