Description

Pencil Urchins are unique additions to saltwater aquariums due to their thick, blunt spines, hardy nature, and ability to graze on algae and organic debris. Also known as Slate Pencil Urchins, Eucidaris tribuloides are nocturnal urchins that spend much of the day tucked into rockwork and become more active after the lights go out. They can help consume algae, detritus, and leftover foods, but they are not as reef-safe as some other urchins and should be kept with caution in coral-heavy aquariums. Their strong body and rigid spines can also dislodge loose frags, unsecured rockwork, or lightweight decorations as they move.

Introduction to Pencil Urchin (Hardy Nocturnal Grazer & Rockwork Scavenger)

Pencil Urchins (Eucidaris tribuloides) are hardy marine urchins known for their thick, pencil-like spines and rugged appearance. Unlike more delicate urchins, their blunt spines give them a distinctive armored look while helping them wedge into crevices and move across rockwork. In the aquarium, they are most active at night, grazing across rocks and hard surfaces in search of algae, detritus, and other available foods.

Care Requirements

Care Level: Easy to Moderate – Hardy, but best for stable aquariums with secure rockwork
Minimum Tank Size: 30+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Requires live rock, caves, crevices, and stable reef parameters

Pencil Urchins do best in mature saltwater aquariums with plenty of rockwork for grazing and shelter. They are strong animals that may push through loose frags or unstable aquascaping, so corals and rock structures should be secured before adding one. Because they are nocturnal, they may remain hidden during the day and become more visible after dark.

Diet & Nutrition

Pencil Urchins are omnivorous grazers and scavengers that feed on algae, detritus, and meaty organic matter.

Diet: Omnivorous – Eats algae, detritus, leftover foods, and some meaty items
Recommended Foods:
Naturally occurring algae on live rock
Detritus and leftover fish food
Dried seaweed
Algae wafers
Small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or finely chopped seafood

While Pencil Urchins will graze on algae, they should not be treated as a strict herbivore. If the aquarium does not provide enough natural food, supplemental feeding with dried seaweed, sinking foods, or small meaty foods may be needed.

Lifespan & Growth Rate

Lifespan: 3-5+ years with proper care
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate – Can become a substantial rockwork grazer over time

Pencil Urchins are hardy, long-lived invertebrates when kept in stable aquariums. Maintaining proper calcium, alkalinity, and overall water quality is important for supporting spine and test growth.

Temperament & Compatibility

Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Peaceful – Does not actively attack fish, but may disturb corals or small sessile invertebrates while grazing
Reef Safe? With caution – May graze on coralline algae, sponges, or some coral tissue and can knock over unsecured frags

Pencil Urchins are best suited for fish-only systems, predator-safe invertebrate displays, macroalgae tanks, or reef aquariums where the aquascape is stable and the keeper understands the risk of incidental coral disturbance. They should not be housed with triggers, puffers, large wrasses, large crabs, or other predators that may damage or eat urchins.

Common Challenges & Considerations

Reef Safe With Caution: Pencil Urchins may graze on coralline algae, sponges, and occasionally coral tissue or small sessile invertebrates.
Can Knock Over Frags: Their strong body and rigid spines can dislodge loose coral plugs, unsecured frags, or unstable rockwork.
Nocturnal Behavior: They may hide during the day and become active mostly at night.
Needs Supplemental Feeding: In cleaner aquariums, offer dried seaweed, algae wafers, or small meaty foods.
Sensitive to Copper: Like all marine invertebrates, they should never be exposed to copper-based medications.
Requires Stable Parameters: Sudden changes in salinity, pH, or alkalinity can stress urchins.

To prevent issues, secure corals and rockwork, provide regular supplemental foods when needed, avoid copper exposure, and place them in aquariums where occasional grazing damage is acceptable.
