FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What is the minimum recommended aquarium size for a Paddlefin Wrasse?

Plan on at least 75 gallons for an adult. The tank should combine ample open swimming room with substantial rockwork and a sand bed.

Can it be kept in a reef aquarium?

Only with caution. Corals are generally safe, but shrimp, crabs, snails, mantis shrimp, and bristleworms may be hunted and eaten.

What should it be fed and how often?

Offer enriched mysis and brine shrimp, other marine meaty foods, and quality marine flakes or pellets. Several small meals daily is best, with three feedings per day a sound target.

The Mexican Rock Wrasse, Thalassoma lucasanum, is a colorful and exceptionally active saltwater fish known for undergoing a dramatic transformation as it matures. Juveniles typically display a dark upper body contrasted by bright yellow along the lower sides and vivid reddish or pink markings, creating a bold striped appearance. As the fish progresses into its adult coloration, the pattern changes substantially, with mature individuals developing rich red to purple tones, blue-green coloration around the head and fins, and a striking yellow band immediately behind the head.

Native to rocky and coral reef environments of the tropical Eastern Pacific, this energetic marine aquarium fish occurs from the Gulf of California southward to Peru, including offshore islands such as the Galápagos. In the wild, it actively patrols reef habitats while feeding on plankton and small crustaceans. Its constant movement, changing coloration, and confident personality make it an eye-catching addition to larger fish-only aquariums and carefully planned reef aquariums.

While generally hardy once established, this wrasse is an energetic feeder that becomes more assertive with maturity. It requires substantial swimming room, secure rockwork, and tankmates capable of handling its fast-paced behavior. Corals are generally left alone, but ornamental crustaceans and other small invertebrates may be hunted.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Eastern Pacific – Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galápagos Islands
Scientific Name: Thalassoma lucasanum

Tank Requirements

Provide a spacious aquarium with generous open swimming areas along with substantial rockwork containing caves, overhangs, and sheltered retreats. This species spends much of the day moving rapidly through the water column and around the reef structure, making aquarium length and unobstructed swimming space particularly important.

A fine sand bed is beneficial because the fish may bury itself when frightened or when settling in for the night. Rock structures should be stable so that normal exploration and foraging activity cannot dislodge them.

Moderate to strong water movement and efficient filtration are appropriate for this active species. A tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential, as wrasses are powerful jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings around plumbing, cords, and overflow boxes.

Diet and Feeding

The Mexican Rock Wrasse is primarily carnivorous, feeding naturally on suspended plankton, small crustaceans, and other reef-associated invertebrates.

In captivity, provide a varied diet consisting of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, krill, clam, squid, frozen marine carnivore blends, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Foods containing crustacean material are particularly appropriate.

Two to three smaller meals per day are ideal when practical. This is typically an enthusiastic feeder once acclimated, and a varied diet helps maintain good body condition and coloration.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Mexican Rock Wrasse is active and semi-aggressive, with territorial behavior often becoming more pronounced as the fish matures. It is best housed with medium-sized or larger marine fish that are confident enough to tolerate its energetic swimming and feeding behavior.

Avoid very timid, slow-moving, or exceptionally small tankmates that may become intimidated or outcompeted for food. Particular caution should be used with other Thalassoma wrasses and similarly shaped species, as aggression can develop.

Keeping a single specimen is the most predictable arrangement for most home aquariums. Multiple individuals require significantly more space and careful observation for territorial behavior.

Reef Compatibility

The Mexican Rock Wrasse is generally coral-safe but is best considered reef safe with caution because of its natural predatory behavior toward small invertebrates.

SPS, LPS, and soft corals are generally not targeted as food. However, ornamental shrimp, small crabs, tiny snails, worms, amphipods, and other mobile invertebrates may be investigated or consumed. The risk typically increases as the wrasse matures and becomes a more capable predator.

This species is therefore better suited to reef aquariums where protecting small ornamental crustaceans is not a primary concern.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 74–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable temperature, salinity, and overall water quality are more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Juvenile coloration changes dramatically with maturity, eventually developing the distinctive adult color pattern.

  • Provide a secure lid because this active wrasse is an accomplished jumper.

  • Ample open swimming space is important despite its relatively moderate adult length.

  • Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, snails, and other small invertebrates may become prey.

  • Territorial behavior can increase as the fish matures, particularly toward other wrasses and similarly shaped fish.
