The HI783-25 reagent pack is a direct replacement consumable for the Hanna Marine Magnesium Checker HC (HI783), one of the more practical colorimetric tools for tracking magnesium levels in a reef system. Each box contains 25 pre-measured packets, enough for 25 discrete tests without any weighing, pipetting, or reagent preparation on the user's end.
The chemistry behind these reagents relies on the colorimetric EDTA method using a calmagite indicator. When a reagent packet is added to a seawater sample, magnesium in the water reacts with the indicator to shift the sample color from blue toward violet. The HI783 photometer reads that color change and converts it to a ppm concentration, removing the subjectivity involved in visual color-card comparisons.
The reagents are manufactured under controlled conditions using high-purity chemicals, and each packet is individually marked with a lot number and expiration date. This makes it straightforward to confirm reagent validity before a test and to trace any anomalous results back to a specific production batch.
These reagents are formulated for saltwater use across a measurement range of 1,000 to 1,800 ppm magnesium — the range that covers normal reef aquarium parameters.
