FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How large an aquarium does an adult need?
Fifty gallons is the minimum, but this active swimmer does far better in a system of roughly 100 to 120 gallons. Prioritize swimming length over total volume when choosing a tank.
Is the Line Spot Triggerfish safe with corals and invertebrates?
It is considered reef safe with corals, although loose colonies may be overturned and should be secured. Shrimp, crabs, snails, urchins, and starfish are at real risk and should not be housed with it.
Does this triggerfish need a covered aquarium?
Yes. Jumping has been reported for this species, so a tightly fitting lid is a sensible precaution.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Line Spot Triggerfish is a striking marine predator with a bold, angular profile and a pattern of fine lines and contrasting spots that gives the species its common name. Like other triggerfish, it has powerful jaws, a prominent first dorsal spine, and a confident swimming style that makes it a commanding display fish. Its combination of unusual patterning, intelligence, and assertive behavior makes it especially appealing for large fish-only marine aquariums.
Xanthichthys lineopunctatus is an Indo-Pacific triggerfish associated with deeper reef slopes and offshore reef environments. Compared with many more aggressive triggerfish, members of the genus Xanthichthys are generally more open-water oriented and can be somewhat less destructive toward tankmates and aquarium décor. Even so, the Line Spot Triggerfish is a substantial, active fish that requires generous swimming space and carefully selected companions.
This species is best suited to experienced aquarists maintaining large fish-only or carefully planned reef systems. Although it may be more coral-compatible than many triggerfish, its size, appetite, and predatory instincts mean ornamental invertebrates should not automatically be considered safe.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Xanthichthys lineopunctatus
Tank Requirements
Provide a large marine aquarium with substantial open swimming space and sturdy rockwork arranged around the perimeter or rear of the tank. This triggerfish is an active swimmer and should not be confined by overly dense aquascaping.
Include caves, overhangs, and secure retreat areas where the fish can rest or withdraw when startled. Rock structures should be stable and well secured because large triggerfish can investigate and disturb loose décor.
Strong biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, good oxygenation, and consistent water movement are important. A tightly fitted lid is also recommended, particularly for newly introduced specimens.
Diet and Feeding
The Line Spot Triggerfish is primarily carnivorous and feeds on zooplankton and other animal-based foods in the wild.
In captivity, offer a varied diet of mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, scallop, and quality frozen marine carnivore preparations. Larger high-quality marine pellets can also be incorporated once the fish is established.
Feed once or twice daily in portions appropriate to the fish’s size and body condition. A varied diet is preferable to relying heavily on one type of seafood.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Line Spot Triggerfish is generally semi-aggressive and should be housed with medium to large marine fish capable of handling its active personality.
Suitable tankmates can include tangs, larger wrasses, angelfish, groupers, and other robust species. Very small, timid, or delicate fish may be intimidated or outcompeted during feeding.
It may be less combative than some triggerfish species, but individual behavior can vary. Use particular caution when housing multiple triggerfish together unless the aquarium is exceptionally large.
Reef Compatibility
The Line Spot Triggerfish is best considered reef safe with caution.
It is generally less likely to deliberately consume coral tissue than many benthic-feeding triggerfish. However, ornamental shrimp, crabs, small snails, and other mobile invertebrates may still be at risk, particularly as the fish grows.
Its large adult size and feeding behavior also make it better suited to robust reef systems than delicate displays containing numerous small or valuable invertebrates.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, well-oxygenated water and avoid sudden changes in salinity, temperature, or pH. Consistency is more important than targeting one exact number within these ranges.
Common Considerations
- Large adult fish: Plan the aquarium around its mature size and high activity level.
- Needs swimming room: Open-water space is particularly important for this more pelagic-style triggerfish.
- Invertebrate risk: Shrimp, crabs, snails, and other mobile invertebrates may be eaten.
- Strong filtration required: Large carnivorous fish can create a significant nutrient load.
- Tankmate selection matters: Avoid very small or timid species that may be intimidated or outcompeted.
