K1-50 Protein Skimmer - IceCap

The IceCap K1-50 is a purpose-built in-sump protein skimmer aimed at reef and marine aquarium systems in the 40–80 gallon range. Its compact footprint of 4.75 by 3.5 inches makes it a practical choice for sumps where space is limited, without sacrificing the surface contact and dwell time needed for effective foam fractionation. Construction relies on solid PVC and high-quality acrylic throughout, with all materials selected for marine compatibility and long-term durability.

At the center of the K1-50 is the DCAIR-700 DC pinwheel pump, which draws 6 watts while generating 200 lph of air draw and 70 gph of water draw. The needle wheel design produces a dense column of fine microbubbles that travel upward through the reaction chamber. The characteristic curved "beer bottle" profile of the skimmer body is not purely aesthetic — it naturally stabilizes the rising air-water mixture and smooths the transition into the neck, promoting consistent skimmate collection in the cup above.

The pipeless output valve is one of the more thoughtful design choices on the K1-50. Most entry- and mid-level skimmers rely on a wedge pipe to direct outgoing water, which introduces turbulence and additional noise at the sump waterline. The K1-50 routes outgoing water laterally below the surface instead, keeping splash to a minimum and simplifying water level adjustment. A secondary bubble dispersing chamber positioned low in the reaction chamber provides a multi-stage diffusion stage that extends contact time and improves foam stability before the mix reaches the neck.

Installation is in-sump only, with a recommended sump water height of 6 to 9 inches. The skimmer includes an optional hanging bracket for sump walls that accommodate that mounting style. Bioload rating is 40 gallons heavy, 60 gallons medium, and 80 gallons light — accurate matching to actual tank bioload will have a significant impact on skimmer performance. The unit carries a 1-year limited warranty from CoralVue/IceCap covering defects in materials and workmanship.
