The Freckle Face Tang, Acanthurus maculiceps, is a striking surgeonfish known for the dense pattern of pale white to yellowish spots scattered across its face and forehead. Its body develops smoky gray to brown coloration with subtle yellow accents, a contrasting marking near the gill opening, and a bright pale band around the caudal peduncle. Mature specimens develop a deeper body and more pronounced convex forehead, giving this saltwater fish an especially impressive presence in a large marine aquarium.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, including the Maldives, Andaman Sea, Christmas Island, Indonesia, the Philippines, southern Japan, and islands of the central Pacific, this species inhabits clear outer reef flats and seaward reefs. It spends much of its time cruising over the reef and grazing algae, either alone or in loose groups.
With an adult size approaching 16 inches, the Freckle Face Tang is best suited to spacious reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums designed for large, active surgeonfish. Its unusual facial pattern, constant movement, and natural grazing behavior make it an outstanding display species when provided with adequate swimming room and appropriate long-term care.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Herbivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-West Pacific
Scientific Name: Acanthurus maculiceps
Tank Requirements
The Freckle Face Tang requires a large aquarium with extensive open swimming space and mature live rock for grazing. Arrange rockwork to provide caves, overhangs, and sheltered resting areas while maintaining long, unobstructed swimming lanes through the aquarium.
Strong water movement and excellent oxygenation are beneficial, reflecting the clear, well-circulated reef environments this species naturally occupies. Efficient filtration is also important because a properly fed adult surgeonfish produces a substantial biological load.
A mature aquarium with naturally occurring algae is ideal, although natural growth should supplement rather than replace regular feeding. Rock structures and corals should be securely positioned to accommodate the movements of a large, powerful adult fish.
Diet and Feeding
The Freckle Face Tang is primarily herbivorous and naturally spends considerable time grazing algae from reef surfaces. A marine vegetable-based diet should form the foundation of its captive nutrition.
Offer dried seaweed or nori regularly, along with spirulina-based pellets, quality herbivore preparations, and frozen foods formulated for marine grazers. Natural macroalgae and microalgae can provide additional dietary variety.
Small amounts of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other marine proteins may be consumed when feeding alongside tankmates, but meaty foods should not replace an algae-rich diet. Multiple smaller feedings throughout the day are beneficial and complement the species' natural grazing behavior.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Freckle Face Tang is semi-aggressive and may become increasingly territorial as it matures. Aggression is most likely to be directed toward other surgeonfish, particularly other Acanthurus species or tangs with similar body shapes and feeding habits.
Keeping a single specimen is generally the most reliable approach. Combining it with other large tangs requires substantial aquarium space, abundant feeding opportunities, and careful attention to introduction order.
It can usually coexist successfully with appropriately sized peaceful to semi-aggressive marine fish. Avoid placing an established adult with very timid tankmates that may be intimidated by its size, speed, or territorial behavior.
Reef Compatibility
The Freckle Face Tang is considered reef safe. It primarily grazes algae and is not normally interested in consuming healthy corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, or other common reef invertebrates.
Its algae-grazing behavior can be beneficial in a reef aquarium, although it should never be purchased solely as an algae-control solution. Because adults become large and active, securely mounting corals and stabilizing rockwork will help prevent accidental disturbance.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable salinity, strong oxygenation, and consistently high water quality are more important than attempting to maintain an exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Large adult size: Adults can approach 16 inches and require substantial swimming room for long-term maintenance.
-
Tang aggression: Territorial behavior may develop toward other surgeonfish, particularly similar Acanthurusspecies.
-
Frequent grazing: Regular access to marine algae and vegetable-rich foods is important for maintaining proper nutrition.
-
Open swimming space: Avoid overcrowding the aquarium with rockwork that restricts movement.
-
Caudal spine: Like other surgeonfish, it possesses a sharp defensive spine on each side of the caudal peduncle and should be handled carefully.
