Male Yellow Cardinalfish are the mouthbrooders. A brooding male will stop eating, linger in one area, and have a visibly swollen, slightly distended lower jaw that looks “full.” The mouth may not close fully and you might see him gently moving his jaw to aerate the eggs. If you want to raise fry, move the brooding male to a separate, quiet tank with identical water parameters and low flow, ideally just before hatching (around day 5–7 after you first notice the bulge). Provide dim lighting and lots of cover. Once you see free-swimming fry, gently remove the male and start feeding the fry very small foods (newly hatched Artemia, copepods, rotifers, or specialized fry feeds) several times per day, while maintaining pristine water quality.
My Yellow Cardinalfish ignores pellets during the day but eagerly eats frozen foods at night. How can I transition it to accept prepared foods reliably?
Start by target-feeding small frozen foods (mysis, finely chopped seafood, enriched brine) at dusk when the fish is already comfortable feeding. Once it’s eating confidently, begin mixing a few tiny, slow-sinking pellets with the frozen food in the same feeding cloud so they associate pellets with “real” food.
