The Coral Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus), also known as the Pixy Hawkfish or Spotted Hawkfish, is a colorful and charismatic saltwater fish admired for its distinctive spotted pattern, expressive personality, and entertaining perching behavior. Its compact, robust body features a pale white to cream-colored background decorated with bold reddish-orange to brown spots and blotches. Coloration can vary considerably between individuals, with some displaying brighter pinkish-red markings and others exhibiting darker, more subdued patterns. Its prominent eyes, pointed snout, and spiny dorsal fin give this species an unmistakable appearance.

Native to the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, and tropical waters along the Pacific coast of Central and South America, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reef channels, and outer reef slopes. Rather than swimming continuously through open water, the Coral Hawkfish spends much of its time resting on coral branches, rocky ledges, and elevated perches, carefully watching its surroundings for potential prey.

With its hardy nature, bold personality, and fascinating hunting behavior, the Coral Hawkfish makes an engaging addition to established saltwater aquariums. Its compact body and relatively modest swimming requirements make it particularly appealing for aquarists seeking a distinctive marine fish for a moderately sized aquarium. Although it can thrive in both fish-only and carefully planned reef aquariums, its territorial tendencies and appetite for small crustaceans must be considered when selecting tankmates.

Tank Requirements

The Coral Hawkfish thrives in a well-established saltwater aquarium featuring abundant live rock, stable water conditions, and numerous elevated perching locations. Unlike active open-water swimmers, hawkfish rely heavily on rocky structures and coral formations where they can rest, observe their surroundings, and establish territory.

A minimum aquarium size of 55 gallons is recommended for long-term housing, providing adequate space for this species, which commonly reaches approximately 4 inches in length, although larger individuals have been documented. Larger aquariums provide additional territorial space and greater flexibility when selecting compatible tankmates.

Arrange rockwork to create sturdy ledges, caves, overhangs, and sheltered crevices that mimic its natural reef habitat. Elevated resting locations are particularly important, as the Coral Hawkfish frequently positions itself above the substrate to watch passing fish and capture available food.

A sandy or crushed coral substrate is suitable, although substrate composition is less important than providing stable rock formations and accessible perching areas. Moderate water movement and good oxygenation are recommended, with calmer areas around rock structures where the fish can rest comfortably.

A securely fitted aquarium lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended. Hawkfish are capable of sudden bursts of movement and may jump when startled, particularly during acclimation or territorial disputes.

Diet and Feeding

The Coral Hawkfish is a carnivorous predator that naturally feeds on small fish, crustaceans, marine worms, and other reef-dwelling invertebrates. Its characteristic hunting behavior involves remaining motionless on an elevated perch before rapidly lunging toward passing prey.

In captivity, this species generally adapts well to a varied diet of high-quality marine-based meaty foods.

Offer a balanced selection that includes:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp

  • Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp

  • Chopped shrimp and prawns

  • Finely chopped marine fish flesh

  • Frozen krill in appropriately sized portions

  • High-quality frozen carnivore blends

  • Protein-rich marine pellets when accepted

Feed once or twice daily, offering portions appropriate for the fish's size and activity level. Because this species is an opportunistic predator, it often responds enthusiastically to feeding and may quickly dart from its perch to capture food.

Ensure that slower or more timid tankmates receive adequate nutrition, as established hawkfish can become assertive during feeding.

A varied marine-based diet helps maintain healthy coloration, proper body condition, and long-term nutritional balance. Avoid relying exclusively on brine shrimp or freshwater feeder fish, which do not provide a complete nutritional foundation.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Coral Hawkfish is a semi-aggressive, territorial species known for its confident personality and distinctive sit-and-wait hunting behavior. It frequently establishes a preferred perch or section of rockwork and may defend this area against other fish.

Although relatively small, this species can display surprising aggression toward newly introduced tankmates, particularly smaller or more timid fish that occupy similar areas of the aquarium.

Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized clownfish, moderately assertive wrasses, dwarf angelfish, tangs, and other robust marine fish that are unlikely to be intimidated or viewed as prey.

Very small gobies, blennies, dartfish, and other delicate fish should be introduced with caution, as they may experience territorial harassment or potentially be targeted as prey.

The Coral Hawkfish may also display aggression toward other hawkfish, particularly individuals competing for the same perching locations. Keeping a single specimen is generally recommended unless maintaining a carefully selected compatible pair in a sufficiently spacious aquarium.

In natural reef environments, this species may form social groups consisting of a dominant male and multiple females. However, maintaining such groups in captivity requires considerable space, careful introductions, and close attention to territorial interactions.

When stocking a community aquarium, introducing the Coral Hawkfish after more peaceful inhabitants have established their territories may help reduce aggression toward new tankmates.

Providing extensive rockwork, visual barriers, and multiple resting locations encourages natural behavior and helps minimize territorial disputes.

Reef Compatibility

The Coral Hawkfish is considered reef safe with caution. It does not naturally feed on coral tissue and can coexist with many established SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and other sessile reef invertebrates.

The primary concern in reef aquariums is its predatory behavior toward small fish and mobile invertebrates. Ornamental shrimp, including cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and smaller decorative shrimp species, may be hunted and consumed.

Small crabs, marine worms, and other vulnerable invertebrates may also be targeted, particularly if they are small enough to be swallowed.

The Coral Hawkfish frequently rests directly on coral branches and rock formations. Although this behavior generally causes little disturbance to sturdy, established coral colonies, repeated perching may irritate delicate coral tissue or cause temporary polyp retraction.

Aquariums containing valuable ornamental shrimp, very small reef fish, or delicate invertebrates should be carefully evaluated before introducing this species.

With appropriate tankmate selection, secure rockwork, and consistent feeding, the Coral Hawkfish can make an attractive and entertaining addition to a reef aquarium. Its bold coloration and characteristic perching behavior add personality and visual interest without the extensive swimming requirements of larger marine fish.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

The Coral Hawkfish benefits from stable marine water conditions, efficient biological filtration, and consistent aquarium maintenance. Although generally hardy once established, maintaining excellent water quality is important during acclimation and throughout its life.

Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH. Stable, consistent parameters are more beneficial than frequent adjustments intended to achieve exact numerical targets.

Common Considerations

  • Territorial Perching Behavior: Frequently occupies elevated rock formations and coral branches while observing its surroundings. May aggressively defend preferred resting locations against other hawkfish or competing species.

  • Predatory Toward Small Invertebrates: May consume ornamental shrimp, small crabs, marine worms, and other vulnerable reef inhabitants. Careful tankmate selection is essential.

  • Bold Personality: Known for its alert, observant behavior and rapid lunges toward passing prey, making it an entertaining display fish for established marine aquariums.

  • Aggression Toward Small Fish: May harass timid bottom-dwelling species or newly introduced fish, particularly when territorial boundaries have already been established.

  • Jumping Risk: Capable of sudden bursts of movement when startled or pursuing prey. A securely fitted aquarium lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended.
