Captive-Bred Red Head Goby – Elacatinus puncticulatus

The Captive-Bred Red Head Goby is a petite saltwater fish with a translucent cream-to-gray body, a row of dark lateral spots, and a brilliant red-orange head accented by fine gold and blue lines. Its vivid facial markings, delicate fins, and habit of perching openly on rockwork make this tiny goby especially noticeable in nano reef aquariums despite its small size.

Native populations of Elacatinus puncticulatus occur in the tropical eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to Ecuador. The species inhabits shallow rocky reefs and is frequently associated with club urchins, using complex reef structure for shelter and lookout points. Adults reach approximately 2 inches.

This species is a facultative cleaner and may remove ectoparasites or damaged tissue from larger fish, but it does not depend on cleaning behavior for survival. Captive-bred specimens adapt well to aquarium conditions and prepared foods, making them excellent additions to peaceful reef aquariums and smaller fish-only systems.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 15 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Facultative Cleaner
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Captive-bred; species native to the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to Ecuador
Scientific Name: Elacatinus puncticulatus

Tank Requirements

Provide an established aquarium with live rock arranged into small caves, narrow crevices, shaded retreats, and elevated perching areas. The Red Head Goby spends much of its time resting on rockwork while watching for food and may select a particular hole or ledge as its permanent territory.

A specialized substrate is not required. Sand, fine gravel, or a bare-bottom aquarium can all work when adequate rock shelter is available. Gentle to moderate, well-distributed water movement is appropriate, with calmer areas where the fish can perch without being displaced.

Use a tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover because small gobies may jump when startled. Guard wide overflow openings and exposed pump intakes, and avoid housing this diminutive fish where it could disappear into unprotected filtration equipment.

Diet and Feeding

In nature, Elacatinus puncticulatus consumes ectoparasites and small reef-associated animals, including tiny worms and crustaceans. Cleaning other fish should be viewed as natural behavior rather than a complete food source or a replacement for parasite prevention and treatment.

Offer finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, Cyclops, calanus, small frozen carnivore blends, and appropriately sized nano pellets. Food should be small enough for the goby’s mouth and allowed to drift near its preferred perch.

Feed two or three small portions daily. Its tiny size can make it easy to overlook during feeding, especially when faster clownfish, wrasses, or other active fish are present. Captive-bred specimens generally accept prepared foods readily, but each fish should still be observed to confirm it is eating.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Red Head Goby is peaceful toward most community fish and is best maintained with calm species that will not intimidate, outcompete, or swallow it. Suitable tankmates include small clownfish, cardinalfish, firefish, assessors, peaceful blennies, other tiny gobies, and mild-mannered reef fish.

Keep a single specimen or a compatible pair in smaller aquariums. Conspecifics may become territorial when insufficient shelter is available, so groups require additional space, numerous separated retreats, and careful observation.

Avoid large hawkfish, aggressive dottybacks, predatory wrasses, groupers, triggers, and other fish capable of consuming such a small goby. Large predatory crustaceans may also present a risk.

Reef Compatibility

The Captive-Bred Red Head Goby is reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, anemones, clams, snails, or established ornamental shrimp.

It may perch on coral colonies or briefly inspect larger fish for cleaning opportunities. Copepods, amphipods, crustacean larvae, and other very small reef animals may be consumed as natural prey, but established ornamental invertebrates are generally left alone.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain consistent salinity, dependable biological filtration, and good oxygenation. Because small aquariums can change rapidly, stability is more important than repeatedly adjusting the system to achieve one exact reading.

Common Considerations

  • Feed small foods frequently: Large food pieces or a single daily feeding may not adequately support this tiny goby.

  • Cleaning behavior is not guaranteed: Some individuals clean tankmates regularly, while others rarely display the behavior.

  • Do not use it as disease control: Cleaning activity does not replace quarantine, observation, or appropriate parasite treatment.

  • Protect it from equipment: Cover pump intakes, overflow openings, and gaps around the aquarium lid.

  • Choose small, peaceful tankmates: Aggressive or predatory fish may intimidate, outcompete, or consume it.
