FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How large an aquarium does a Canary Blenny need?
Provide at least a 30-gallon aquarium furnished with mature live rock and plenty of open swimming space above the rockwork.
Can more than one Canary Blenny be kept together?
Keep one per aquarium unless a known pair is obtained, because adults may become territorial toward their own kind and close relatives.
Is the Canary Blenny reef safe and safe to handle?
It is reef safe and will not bother corals or sessile invertebrates, though it does hunt microfauna in the rockwork. Its defensive fangs can deliver a painful bite, so avoid hand feeding and take care during maintenance.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Canary Blenny is a bright, streamlined saltwater fish prized for its vivid yellow coloration, active swimming behavior, and distinctive personality. Its slender body, expressive face, and tendency to cruise through the water column give it a more open-water presence than many other blennies. The brilliant yellow color makes it especially attractive against dark live rock and blue reef lighting.
Meiacanthus oualanensis, also known as the Canary Fang Blenny, is native to Fiji and nearby areas of the western central Pacific. In nature, it inhabits coral-rich reef environments where it feeds on plankton and small drifting foods. Like other fang blennies in the genus Meiacanthus, it possesses venom-associated grooved teeth used primarily for defense, which helps discourage predators.
Its manageable adult size, generally peaceful temperament, and excellent reef compatibility make it a strong choice for community reef aquariums. It is usually easy to feed once established and can be maintained with a wide variety of peaceful marine fish.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Fiji and western central Pacific
Scientific Name: Meiacanthus oualanensis
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature marine aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, holes, and narrow crevices where the Canary Blenny can retreat when startled or rest at night.
Unlike many bottom-oriented blennies, this species spends a significant amount of time swimming in open water. Leave clear swimming space around the aquascape while still providing multiple secure shelter options.
Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are ideal. A secure lid or mesh cover is recommended because fang blennies can jump when frightened or during acclimation.
Diet and Feeding
The Canary Blenny is an omnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on small drifting organisms in the water column.
Offer a varied diet of enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine foods, quality frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized pellets or flakes. Foods containing marine algae or spirulina can also provide useful dietary variety.
Feed small portions once or twice daily. Established specimens generally adapt readily to prepared foods and often feed enthusiastically from the water column.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Canary Blenny is generally peaceful and well suited to community reef aquariums.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, anthias, peaceful wrasses, tangs, and other non-aggressive marine species. It may defend a preferred shelter but is not typically a persistent aggressor toward unrelated fish.
Use caution when keeping multiple similar fang blennies together, particularly in smaller aquariums. Territorial disputes can occur between closely related or similarly shaped species.
Reef Compatibility
The Canary Blenny is considered reef safe.
It does not normally damage corals, clams, shrimp, snails, or other established ornamental invertebrates. Its feeding behavior is primarily directed toward planktonic and prepared foods rather than coral tissue.
This makes it suitable for mixed reefs, SPS systems, LPS aquariums, and soft coral displays.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable salinity and consistent water quality. Long-term stability is more important than targeting one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
- Defensive fang blenny: This species has grooved teeth associated with venom used primarily as a defense against predators.
- Bright adult coloration: Its vivid yellow body makes it especially striking in reef aquariums.
- Active swimmer: Provide open-water swimming room in addition to rockwork and caves.
- Jumping risk: A secure lid or mesh cover is recommended.
- Generally reef safe: Corals and established ornamental invertebrates are typically ignored.
