Bio-Spheres 1kg - IceCap

IceCap Bio-Spheres are a ceramic biological filtration media designed to support the bacterial colonies responsible for converting ammonia and nitrite into less harmful compounds. Each 1.25-inch sphere packs an exceptionally high surface area into a compact footprint, allowing dense populations of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria to establish and sustain efficient nutrient cycling. A single 1kg box includes 40 spheres and is rated to handle systems up to 750 gallons.

The ceramic construction is chemically inert, maintaining a neutral pH between 7.0 and 7.5 so it does not interfere with aquarium chemistry. The material is durable enough for long-term deployment — IceCap recommends a five-year replacement interval under normal maintenance, with annual light cleaning using tank water to remove surface debris without stripping the bacterial film.

Bio-Spheres are passive media with no moving parts, making placement straightforward. Stack them in a sump compartment, load them into a media reactor or canister, place them in a trickle or wet/dry filter chamber, or drop them directly into the aquarium. The included mesh bag keeps spheres contained in open filter compartments.

For new setups, IceCap recommends seeding the media by soaking it overnight in a bacterial culture such as Fauna Marin Bacto Blend before adding it to the system. This accelerates the establishment of a functional biofilm and reduces the time needed to cycle a new tank or recover from a media change.
