About This Video

Blaine and livestock specialist Colson share Top Shelf Aquatics’ five recommended saltwater fish for beginners. Their list features flame and longnose hawkfish, the royal gramma, Midas blennies, zebra bar gobies, and clownfish. They emphasize that the right choice depends on aquarium size, setup, and each fish’s requirements, so hobbyists should research any species before adding it to a home system.

Hawkfish offer distinctive personalities but may prey on ornamental shrimp, snails, or hermit crabs; they also need a lid and are suggested for tanks of 30 gallons or more. Royal grammas bring bright color, accept varied foods, and can suit nano aquariums. Midas blennies need rockwork, a lid, and at least 30 gallons. Passive zebra bar gobies can be kept alone, though Colson recommends a group of at least three in 30 gallons or more. Clownfish take the top spot because they are hardy, widely available in many color variations, and accept pellets, frozen foods, and flakes.

topshelf Aquatics everyone's going to have different choices and we wanted to share ours here from topshelf there are a ton of options when it comes to saltwater fish in our hobby whether it be tank dottybacks clownish there are so many different species of fish that we can keep in our saltwater aquariums at home but today we're going to focus on some of the beginner fish and how you can keep them in your tanks we're also going to be giving you some tips and tricks some nuggets of knowledge so even the experienced Reef Keepers can enjoy this video Let's Dive In [Music] like I mentioned there are a ton of options when it comes to different saltwater fish you can keep in your reef tank now it's going to depend on what kind of size tank you're keeping what kind of style tank you're keeping maybe it's a reef tank maybe it's a fish only with live rock it truly depends on what kind of style reef aquarium or what kind of style saltwater tank you are setting up now in today's video though we're going to be focusing on the fish that we feel are the best options for beginner when it comes to our top five and this is just the list coming from us here at topshelf for quatic everyone else can have their own opinion so we're not saying that these are Concrete and brick solid options of what you should be choosing these are going to be some really good fish that you can start out with if you're getting into saltwater fish tanks now remember just because we haven't mentioned the fish you may want to be keeping in your saltwater tank on our fish list that doesn't mean you can't keep it what it is going to depend on though is you doing the proper amount of research making sure you have the right kind of tank and you're giving it all the requirements it needs so it can flourish in your home system now if there is a fish you guys want to hear about down below be sure to drop a comment down below because we have some amazing talking about fish videos with teras that have been going on for quite some time so if you guys have a specific species or group of fish you want to hear about drop a comment down below all right we have teamed up with Coulson our livestock specialist coulson's going to be talking about some of the fish on our list our top five fish Coulson you got anything you want to say before we get into this list we got a pretty good list going uh it was very hard to pick this list honestly we it in I think we did a pretty good job so stay tuned I would have to agree it's really hard to choose from all the different saltwater species especially that we have available here at topshelf Aquatics but let's go aad dive in and let's get into number [Applause] [Music] five all right well our first fish is actually going to be two fish it going to be both our flame hawkfish and our Longnose hawkfish now these are two two types of fish well they're both Haw fish and these are actually fish that are predators by Nature so they're going to actually be going after some more meaty Foods when it comes to home aquariums it is something to definitely watch out for if you do have some ornamental shrimp like cleaner shrimp Scarlet shrimp or maybe some peppermint shrimp things like that they may go after them and I have seen in the past they will possibly go after your snails and your Hermits overall though these are some very Corky and unique fish if you can see over here or maybe over here on my other side they kind of just perch and hang out they're really goofy I love the Longnose Hogfish when they kind of sit there they have their super long snout and they have kind of chameleon like eyes when they're kind of looking around searching out some food I really do enjoy their personalities and kind of their cork they bring to Reef aquariums when it comes to the sizes of Tanks you're thinking about putting these guys into we're thinking about 30 gallons and bigger so these are fish that we're not going to be keeping in Nano tanks but if you have a little bit bigger of a tank these are going to be some perfect options now when it comes to myself the long those hog fish is actually near and dear to my heart it was one of the first fish I ever got when I originally started my first saltwater fish tank this was back when I was 8 years old and shout out to my mom I remember when I was in school I actually received it in the mail she was the one that had to drip acclimate it get it all set up it ended up jumping out of the bucket she freaked out grabbed it and threw it in and ended up living and it was actually one of the last fish I ended up giving away before I moved away to college it is one thing to remember too they can be jumpers so having Lids on these tanks is going to be important as well for your hawkfish let's go ahead flash over to Coulson and check out our number four so coming in at number four on our list is going to be the Royal grma now this fish brings a bright color into the aquarium it's also good for Nano tanks as well which most beginners start out with with a nano aquarium uh they also are territorial so they will defend themselves against the other fish in the tank so it makes them a really hearty fish now these fish do tend to hide when you first get them well as they get used to the tank they do come out a lot and they'll be right up front center and they'll eat right out of your hand sometimes now one good reason why they're such good for beginners is that they eat a wide variety of foods whether that be like pellets or frozen food or pretty much whatever you throw into the tank now we'll move on to number three with bla now coming in at number three we're going to have a fish that a lot of people say all hobbyist should add into their tank One Way Or Another We're going to be talking about minus blennies now these are some of the biggest Personalities in our Reef aquariums if you guys haven't seen a minus blendy before they are some goofy looking fish they're very snake likee in how they kind of move around the tank and and quick fun fact they actually don't have a swim bladder so that's the reason they're not really good free swimmers and they spend a lot of their time kind of tucked into the Rock work or kind of hanging out you know snaked into a place now one thing to realize too they're going to find a little home some area like holes in the rockwork and they're going to end up making that their little burrow they'll end up poking their heads out and they have some really cool and unique you know kind of Corks And ways they kind of hang out in the reef tank these are another really good fish to take to a variety of foods they're going to like a Row in kind of meteor diet but they'll tend to take to a lot of different prepared foods over the course of time a minimum of 30 gallons is going to be wanted for these fish because they can tend to be a little bit of territorial when it comes to their little Burrows and another thing to remember is you're going to for sure want to lid on your tank for these fish because they love to jump and you don't want to see one of your Midas blennies going carpet surfing so definitely add in yourself a lid and let's go ahead flash over to Coulson and let's check out our number two fish on our list so coming in at number two is going to be the zebra bar GOI these guys are also referred to as zebra Dart GOI bar dartfish zebra GOI and Chinese zebra GOI now I usually recommend keeping these guys in a 30 gallon or more because we keep them in a small school of at least three they're very passive very cool very pretty they have these red stripings that go down the sides of them these guys are super super friendly and they'll even follow your finger along the glass and eat right out of your hand these guys make a great addition to the aquarium they'll eat pretty much anything U meaty food like mice shrimp they'll eat pellets flakes pretty much anything you keep within the aquarium uh so that's why it makes them such a good beginner fish you can keep them alone but I do recommend keeping them as a group just cuz they'll eat better and they'll be more personable and come out to the glass if there's a big group of them now let's go check out what our number one pick is and to everyone's surprise our number one fish is going to be clown fish you guys all know clown fish due to the craze of Finding Nemo they truly blew up and I have to say clownish are pretty much the Goldfish of the saltwater Hobby they're extremely hearty they eat basically everything and there's a lot of them available all across the nation so coming off that there's a huge variety of clown fish they've been bred throughout this entire hobby so they're pretty much all aquacultured uh but they come in a huge variety of color variations just to name a few there's the classic orange clownish orange ocellaris uh there's frostbite there's the black illeris clown you got Gladiators snowstorms huge variety of clown fish out there since they're pretty much all aquacultured it makes them very hearty and you can pretty much get them to eat anything whether that be a pellet food frozen food or even flakes this is also a species of fish that we keep in our home aquariums that are actually readily breeding in our home tanks there's a lot of it happening I've had many pairs of clownish in the past lay eggs it is quite the process of getting them from laying eggs to actually hatching but it's really cool to see to actually have that breeding you know activity happening in your home tank overall though clownish are definitely going to our number one choice when it comes to our top five beginner fish I want to hear down in the comments down below what do you think are the top five best beginner fish and what are some of those that are you're keeping in your reef tanks at home a friendly reminder for all of you too if you're looking at picking up some clownfish today and you're not local to us here at topshelf Aquatics we have a huge variety of non wizzywig clowns available on our site right now be sure to head over to our website check it out grab up a nice group of clowns and
