Overview:
The Blue Coral Banded Shrimp is a reef-associated cleaner/scavenger shrimp that does best in a mature, stable saltwater aquarium with ample rockwork. Provide multiple caves and overhangs so it can claim a secure daytime retreat and forage at dusk and night. Stable parameters matter more than chasing exact numbers: 24–26°C (75–79°F), salinity 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, alkalinity 8–10 dKH, ammonia/nitrite 0, and low nitrate. Moderate flow and good oxygenation support molting and overall vigor. Because it molts regularly, avoid rapid swings in salinity, temperature, and alkalinity, and always keep a tight lid on chemical use—this shrimp is highly sensitive to metals and many medications.
Compatibility:
This species can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks, and often becomes the dominant shrimp. It is generally safe with medium to larger, non-aggressive reef fish that won’t nip at shrimp (many gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, and some wrasses with caution). Avoid housing with hawkfish, many triggers, puffers, large wrasses, lionfish, or any fish known to eat crustaceans. It may attack or kill other ornamental shrimp, particularly similar-shaped species or additional coral banded shrimp, unless the tank is large with abundant hiding and a confirmed bonded pair. It can also prey on very small shrimp and tiny crabs. With corals it is typically reef-safe, but hungry individuals may steal food from LPS corals during feeding.
Health and Quarantine:
Most losses trace back to stress during acclimation, poor water quality, or molting problems. Use slow drip acclimation (45–90 minutes) and keep exposure to air minimal. Provide iodine through regular water changes rather than dosing unless you test accurately; overdosing is risky. Signs of trouble include failed molts, lethargy, loss of appetite, or persistent hiding beyond normal behavior. Quarantine is recommended in a small, stable, cycled tank with PVC shelters; never treat with copper or other metal-based medications. During molts, leave the shed exoskeleton in the tank—shrimp often consume it to recover minerals.
