The Male Zebra Lyretail Angelfish (Genicanthus caudovittatus), also known as the Zebra Angelfish or Red Sea Swallowtail Angelfish, is an elegant and highly distinctive marine aquarium fish. Mature males develop a pale blue to silvery body crossed by numerous narrow dark vertical bars, along with a prominent dark band near the base of the dorsal fin. Long extensions on the deeply forked caudal fin add to its graceful appearance and give this species its characteristic lyretail profile. Adults reach approximately 8 inches in total length.

Native to the western Indian Ocean, G. caudovittatus occurs from the Red Sea south along eastern Africa to South Africa, with populations also recorded around Madagascar, Réunion, Mauritius, and the Maldives. It inhabits reef slopes from shallow Red Sea habitat to considerably deeper reefs elsewhere in its range. In nature, males are commonly encountered with several females and feed primarily on plankton suspended above the reef.

Unlike many marine angelfish that graze heavily on sponges and sessile invertebrates, Genicanthus angelfish are open-water planktivores and are among the most dependable large angelfish for a reef aquarium. Their generally peaceful temperament, active swimming behavior, and strong coral compatibility make them equally attractive for spacious reef or peaceful fish-only aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with generous open swimming space combined with substantial rockwork for shelter. Zebra Lyretail Angelfish spend considerably more time swimming in the water column than many other angelfish, so long, unobstructed swimming lanes are particularly important. Rockwork should still include caves, overhangs, cracks, and shaded retreat areas where the fish can rest or withdraw when startled.

A minimum 125-gallon aquarium is recommended, with additional space especially beneficial when maintaining a pair or harem. Diet and Feeding

The species has a natural social structure in which a male may associate with several females. Compatible pairs or harems can therefore be maintained in sufficiently large aquariums, preferably when the fish are introduced together. Genicanthus angelfish are sexually dimorphic, with males and females displaying distinctly different coloration.

Avoid keeping multiple mature males together unless the aquarium is exceptionally large, as competition between males can lead to territorial aggression. Excessively aggressive tankmates should also be avoided because they can prevent this relatively peaceful angelfish from feeding normally.
