The Female Zebra Lyretail Angelfish (Genicanthus caudovittatus), also known as the Zebra Angelfish or Red Sea Swallowtail Angelfish, is an elegant marine aquarium fish with understated yet distinctive coloration. Females have a soft lavender-gray to silvery body accented by a dark marking above the eye and bold black bands along the upper and lower margins of the deeply forked caudal fin. This graceful swallowtail profile contrasts sharply with the vertically striped coloration of mature males, making the species strongly sexually dimorphic.

Native to the western Indian Ocean, G. caudovittatus ranges from the Red Sea south along East Africa to South Africa and also occurs around Madagascar, Réunion, Mauritius, and the Maldives. It inhabits reef slopes from shallow Red Sea habitats to deeper reef environments elsewhere in its range. In nature, these angelfish swim above the reef feeding on suspended plankton, and a single male is commonly associated with several females. Adults reach approximately 8 inches in total length.

Unlike many large marine angelfish that graze directly on sponges, corals, and other sessile organisms, the Zebra Lyretail Angelfish is primarily a planktivore. This feeding strategy, combined with its comparatively peaceful temperament, makes it one of the more dependable full-size angelfish choices for a reef aquarium.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with generous open swimming space together with substantial rockwork for shelter. Zebra Lyretail Angelfish spend considerable time swimming above the reef rather than remaining tightly associated with rock surfaces, so long, unobstructed swimming lanes are especially important.

Arrange rockwork to create caves, overhangs, cracks, and shaded retreat areas without overcrowding the aquarium. Newly introduced specimens may initially remain close to shelter before becoming more confident in open water. Moderate to strong circulation, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are appropriate for this active planktivorous angelfish.

No specialized substrate is required, so either sand or a conventional reef substrate is suitable. Additional aquarium space is beneficial when keeping a pair or harem rather than a single female.

Diet and Feeding

The Female Zebra Lyretail Angelfish is primarily a planktivore. Wild fish feed on planktonic organisms several meters above the reef, so captive feeding should emphasize appropriately sized foods that remain suspended in the water column long enough for natural feeding behavior.

Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped krill or marine seafood, frozen plankton blends, and quality marine pellets or flakes. Angelfish preparations and foods containing Spirulina or other marine algae can also be incorporated for additional nutritional variety.

Feed two to three smaller meals daily when practical. Frequent feeding is particularly useful during acclimation and more closely reflects the species' natural habit of taking small food items throughout the day.

In nature, one male is commonly found with several females, and this social structure can also be replicated in sufficiently large aquariums. Compatible pairs or harems are possible, with simultaneous introductions helping reduce territorial disputes. Multiple females can generally be maintained together more readily than multiple mature males.

Avoid excessively aggressive tankmates that may continually chase the angelfish or prevent it from feeding in open water. Very boisterous fish can be especially problematic during the initial acclimation period.

Reef Compatibility

The Zebra Lyretail Angelfish is reef safe and is one of the stronger choices among full-size marine angelfish for a coral aquarium. Its natural feeding behavior is centered on plankton in the water column rather than grazing directly on coral tissue, sponges, or other sessile reef organisms.

It is generally suitable for aquariums containing SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clams, ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other common reef inhabitants.
