FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Is this fish realistically suitable for a typical home aquarium?
In most cases it is not, because an adult can approach 39 inches and requires 750 gallons or more with extensive open swimming room. It is best considered a public-display or highly specialized system fish.
Will a Whitemargin Unicorn Tang harm corals or ornamental invertebrates?
It does not feed on coral tissue and generally leaves shrimp, other invertebrates, and small fishes alone. The realistic hazard is physical damage from a large adult brushing against loose colonies, so secure all rockwork and corals.
What should this fish be eating before purchase?
Look for a specimen already taking both marine plant matter and zooplankton-style foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, or krill. Live brine shrimp can help initiate feeding in a newly acquired individual.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Whitemargin Unicorn Tang, Naso annulatus, is an enormous and distinctive saltwater fish known for its streamlined body, developing forehead horn, and striking white accents on the tail and fins. Juveniles and subadults are generally brown to olive with a paler underside and a conspicuous white band around the caudal peduncle. As the fish matures, the forehead projection becomes increasingly pronounced, the paired caudal plates become formidable cutting keels, and adults develop a more imposing profile. Mature males may also develop elongated caudal filaments.
Native to a vast portion of the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa across to Hawaii and French Polynesia and north to southern Japan, this species undergoes notable habitat and dietary changes with age. Juveniles are commonly associated with shallow lagoon reefs and graze algae, while large adults move onto deeper outer reef slopes and feed extensively on zooplankton in open water. With an adult length that can approach 39 inches, the Whitemargin Unicorn Tang is an extraordinary marine aquarium fish suitable only for exceptionally large reef aquariums or fish-only displays designed around its tremendous adult size and swimming requirements.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Expert Only
Minimum Tank Size: 750 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Planktivore / Omnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii and French Polynesia, north to southern Japan
Scientific Name: Naso annulatus
Tank Requirements
The Whitemargin Unicorn Tang requires an exceptionally large aquarium with extensive uninterrupted swimming space. Adults can approach 39 inches in total length, placing this species well beyond the practical limits of most home aquariums. A system of at least 750 gallons with an aquarium length approaching 10 feet is recommended for appropriate long-term housing.
Aquascaping should prioritize open water. Position sturdy rockwork along the rear or sides of the aquarium to create large caves, overhangs, and protected nighttime resting areas without restricting swimming lanes.
Moderate to strong water movement, very high oxygenation, substantial biological filtration, and dependable nutrient export are essential. Large adults consume considerable amounts of food and produce a correspondingly significant waste load.
All rockwork and coral structures should be extremely secure. A mature specimen is a powerful swimmer capable of accidentally displacing inadequately secured aquarium structures.
Diet and Feeding
The natural diet changes significantly as this species matures. Juveniles consume substantial amounts of filamentous algae, while adults increasingly feed on large zooplankton in the water column.
Captive specimens should receive a varied diet that reflects both feeding strategies. Offer dried marine algae or nori, spirulina-based foods, and quality herbivore pellets alongside mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, copepod-based preparations, and quality frozen plankton blends.
Foods distributed through the water column are particularly appropriate for larger specimens and encourage natural open-water feeding behavior.
Feed multiple smaller meals throughout the day. Marine algae should remain part of the diet even after the fish begins accepting substantial quantities of planktonic and protein-rich foods.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Whitemargin Unicorn Tang is generally manageable with unrelated marine fish but should be considered semi-aggressive because of its tremendous adult size and potential territorial behavior toward other surgeonfish.
Appropriate tankmates include large angelfish, rabbitfish, substantial wrasses, compatible triggerfish, and other robust marine species capable of sharing an exceptionally large aquarium.
Particular caution is required around other Naso species and large surgeonfish competing for the same open-water territory. Even relatively mild territorial interactions become significant when involving a fish approaching three feet or more in length.
Although the species may occur in small schools in nature, keeping multiple adults requires public-aquarium-scale space and is not practical for typical private marine systems.
Reef Compatibility
The Whitemargin Unicorn Tang is considered reef safe. Its natural feeding behavior is focused on algae when young and zooplankton as it matures rather than healthy coral tissue.
It does not normally prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, or other common reef invertebrates. The primary reef consideration is physical rather than predatory: a very large adult can easily contact or dislodge poorly secured coral colonies while swimming.
Large reef structures should therefore be designed with generous clearance and secured firmly enough to accommodate the fish's eventual size and power.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable conditions are more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to reach an exact value. Excellent oxygenation, stable salinity, strong filtration, and consistent water quality are particularly important for such a massive, active marine fish.
Common Considerations
-
Exceptional adult size: Naso annulatus can approach 39 inches, making it one of the largest surgeonfish commonly encountered in the aquarium trade.
-
Diet changes with maturity: Juveniles graze heavily on algae, while large adults become increasingly dependent on zooplankton and other drifting foods.
-
Major long-term space requirement: This species requires an exceptionally large aquarium with approximately 10 feet of swimming length and is unsuitable for most home systems.
-
Developing forehead horn: The characteristic horn becomes increasingly prominent with maturity and is much less developed in juveniles.
-
Powerful caudal blades: Mature specimens develop formidable cutting keels near the base of the tail and must be handled with extreme care during capture or transfer.
