Undulate Triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus)

The Undulate Triggerfish is one of the most striking and recognizable triggerfish in the marine aquarium hobby, admired for its vivid green and orange maze-like pattern and electric blue facial markings. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species is exceptionally intelligent, bold, and highly interactive, often recognizing its keeper and eagerly greeting them at feeding time. While beautiful, the Undulate Triggerfish is also infamous for its aggressive temperament, making it best suited for experienced aquarists.

Tank Requirements
A 180-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended for adult specimens. Provide abundant live rock with caves and sturdy structures that allow the fish to establish a secure territory while leaving ample open swimming space. A tight-fitting lid is essential, and all rockwork should be securely placed, as triggerfish are powerful and may rearrange unsecured decorations.

Color, Personality, and Hardiness
This species displays an iridescent green body covered in intricate orange to yellow wavy lines, highlighted by brilliant blue markings around the mouth and fins. Extremely intelligent and fearless, the Undulate Triggerfish quickly develops a distinct personality and actively interacts with its surroundings. It is exceptionally hardy, adapts readily to aquarium life, and is highly disease resistant when maintained in excellent water quality.

Diet and Feeding
Offer a varied diet of shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, krill, silversides, and other meaty marine foods, supplemented with high-quality carnivore pellets. Hard-shelled foods are beneficial for naturally wearing down the fish's continuously growing teeth. Feed once or twice daily while avoiding overfeeding to maintain optimal health.

Tankmates and Behavior
The Undulate Triggerfish is not reef-safe and should be considered one of the most aggressive triggerfish available. It will readily prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other mobile invertebrates, and may nip at sessile invertebrates. It should only be housed with large, robust fish capable of defending themselves, and even then, compatibility is never guaranteed. Best results are achieved in aggressive fish-only systems where the Undulate Triggerfish is often introduced last to minimize territorial dominance.
